I bought a open box excellent for last years model with i9-12900h rtx 3070ti for $989 after tax. Wondering if i should return and get this newer model. Not sure if theres a big jump in performance to justify though

Return it. That thing is hotter than this. I have returned mine.
Or simply add $200 and get a 4080 HP

Not worth it unless you need frame gen. 3070ti will run most games easily. Same vram too (8gb)

edit: m16 3070ti has timespy 10444 vs m16 4070 with 12355. Decent improvement and it runs cooler. (source: Jarrod'sTech)

The last year's M16 has a low wattage 100W + 20W configuration but runs at 100W most of the time. RTX 3070 Ti can match a RTX 4070 when it is a full wattage card, i.e. 140W-150W category whereas RTX 4070 just needs 100W to reach its full potential. This year's M16 with RTX 4070 is a good amount of faster and cooler than last year's M16 with 100W RTX 3070 Ti.

It is HDR display but not the Mini-LED version, just the standard IPS one.

there is some kind of power management issue on the m16. if you limit CPU in windows power plan to 98/99%. mine wont exceed 78c(cpu) when gaming. i also repasted and reapplied LM and limit CPU to 50W.

I just got this recently, love it so far. If you plan on upgrading the ram or SSD make sure to watch a video, there are screws under some foam caps and on the back "bar" that props it up.

Tempting, I have the Asus ROG G15 2021 model, Ryzen 5900HS and RTX 3070. This still holds up but I'm surprised even in Warzone it can only play in FHD and not QHD, and in "performance" mode to get to 60 fps it cuts a lot of graphic effects/features. Seeing as how the 4070 has the same RAM, and RAM amount is the real bottleneck, I think I'll wait for the 5k series where I think nvidia will have learned their lesson. The 2021 model does run pretty hot, and doesn't have a mux switch.

It's not *terrible* but at 4.6 lbs it is a bit heavier than my 14in laptop at 3.3 lbs. Could be worse. 🤷 ♂️
