Thank you in advance for any advice. I'm looking for a gaming computer within my $1,500 budget. There is an open box available near me. At $1316, this appears to fit the bill. I'd like to buy something within the next couple of months. With the understanding that no one has a crystal ball, in your opinion, is there theoretical deals out there that might be better, or should I get this one?

This or the Asus Vivobook from Microcenter for $1329. This is a great machine though. Better fit and finish than the Vivobook. The Vivobook is brand new and has a better processor but only one total M.2 slot vs this one's total of two. Also, this has Windows Hello - Face ID and I think, but am not sure, that the Vibobook only has Tough ID.

Thank you for the reply. I'll be able to run most new games on this, correct? Maybe not at the best resolution, but a good mid, I'm guessing?

I am not a huge gamer, but I don't see why not. A RAM update would be good - though maybe not necessary - and there's a lot of screws to remove at the bottom of it to get in there. I played Spider-Man on mine and performance was fine. Fans can get loud though. I am sure it's better spec'd than a four year old PS5 or Xbox. Battery isn't great. The screen is really nice. Good looking machine and very nice build quality.

This will absolutely play any game. You can drop quality to medium on the most demanding titles or you can use Nvidia dlss option which is basically AI upscaling so the game renders at less than max resolution but then upscales. I ran demanding titles on a laptop 2070 with 4k resolution using dlss.

This laptop also has 500 nits brightness which is very good. Most laptops come with low 300 or less nits because nits isn't a marketable term so companies usually skimp on this area to cut costs.

These laptops are in a weird spot. The performance is equal to or less than a 3060ti 8gb.

That level of performance is getting old and really starting to struggle at 1440p with most of the new games.

4060 to 4070 is a noticable but small jump. Smaller than 3060 to 3060ti.

4070 to 4080 is a big performance jump in laptops, even more than desktops. It's a completely different chip and you go from 8gb to 12gb's of video memory. It's equivalent to a desktop 4070 GPU, the laptop 4080 is actually intended for 1440p and the laptop 4070 really just is not suited for 1440p.

I'm going to get allot here for telling the truth here but you are gonna get a better experience with a 1080p 4060 laptop for half the price or coughing up a few more hundred dollars for a 4080 laptop.

Unless you have a specific use case for some older games or esport games.... 1500 is allot for a gaming laptop that's gonna struggle around 30 fps at 1440p in most recent games and possibly do even worse in upcoming games.

One strategy to mitigate future deals or price drops is to get the $50 My Best Buy Plus membership. It gives you 60 days to return something instead of 14. That way if there's an additional price drop within the 60 days, you can have Best Buy price match it. If the price never drops and you end up not using the plan benefits, I believe you can just call Best Buy and get a refund because the plan wasn't useful to you. I am not 100% on this but someone else on here advised that in a similar listing. I think the 60 day return policy is pretty worth it on its own.

How is this a deal when 16 days before it was on sale for $50 less?

Unlike the 7940hs/4060 G14 that's actually $50 less now than it was before and the lowest price it's been even including the holiday sales.

I agree with what this person is saying and when I had done my own research on the 40 series cards, I basically came to the same consensus. Ironically, I had initially purchased a G16 with the 4060 for $1049 because I was following the same train of thought you have outlined here. The next week, I saw this M16 4070 go on sale for $1599 and there were open box excellent units for $1271. I bought an open box M16 and tried both laptops out side by side for a week before I returned the G16 and kept the M16. I tried running all the games I intended to play on both and they performed pretty similarly. The M16 had slightly better performance and both laptops ran really hot but the G16 was always a lot louder than the M16, I'm guessing because the M16 has an extra fan in the 2023 revision.

I rationalized the $222 price difference for a few reasons but the 4070 bump was not really high up on that list. Instead, I was more interested in the fact that it is much more upgradeable and had a few quality of life improvements over the G16 that I thought I would appreciate.

In particular:
x2 RAM slots and you can upgrade to 64GB
x2 M.2 slots for SSD upgrades
Better processor (i9 vs i7)
More storage (1TB vs 512GB)
1080p camera vs 720p
Better screen (240hz vs 165hz)
Black color vs Gray

I think this laptop is a pretty solid purchase and you're getting a lot of value for your money, at least in comparison to other brands. Asus TUF units and Lenovo Legions (when on sale) did seem a bit cheaper than their ROG counterparts, but I just prefer the ROG brand and have been satisfied with their products for many years now.

OP, if you don't care for a 16" laptop, though, I hear great things about the G14, especially with the Ryzen chip. The integrated graphics on that chip is much more powerful than the Intel integrated graphics, which means you could get some decent gaming in while on battery and not using the dGPU and much better battery life compared to an Intel chip. When I was shopping for the G16, the other laptop I strongly considered was the G14 with a 4060 and the Ryzen 9 7940HS that is currently on sale for $1000 ($800 open box).

Word of caution from my actual experience. I would recommend pulling the heatsinks on this model and checking the Liquid Metal application. I had the previous gen (2022: i9-12900H + RTX3070ti) and it started having random issues like stalling, then not being able to recognize USB devices. Ultimately it just shut off one day and never booted or charged again. Had it for just over a year. I tore it down and found that ASUS had applied WAY TOO MUCH liquid metal to the CPU and it had run out all over the motherboard and shorted out chips on the board - fried the laptop. I mentioned this to a friend at work who had the same laptop and he found a similar situation - too much liquid metal. Thankfully he caught his before it caused damage. He tried repasting with normal thermal paste and temps were too high, so ASUS had this model performing right on the limit and needs the liquid metal. I think the 2022 model was ASUS' first production application of liquid metal, so maybe they just hadn't honed in the process yet. But I would check before your laptop turns into a brick a week or two outside of the warranty.

1. Better to understand the difference between a 14" laptop vs a 16" laptop, first, different GPUs as well; the two are incomparable to begin with.
2. The i9 runs circles around the Ryzen 9 on the G14.
3. The G14 has many complaints of heating issues while this does not and is one of the best 4070 gaming laptops of the previous year.
4. Already mentioned it was $50 more in the description, so thanks for nothing; It's still way less than the deal on the new one which was $1499 as lowest in the past; unlike your deal which was new for a couple of dollars more.

If portability is a person's main need, then G14 is a no-brainer, but if it's not and you want a desktop replacement then Zephyrus M16 is a clear winner.

1. My comment has nothing to do with the fact that these are two different computers, I don't know how you missed that. No one asked for a comparison of the actual laptops.
2. I was comparing two kinds of deals. This post is for a laptop that's actually $50 more than it was just two weeks ago, while the other post is for a laptop that's $50 less than it's ever been: hence, the g14 was a super slick deal, worth posting.
3. You compared the laptop I posted with it's price 3 months ago, during the holidays. Of course it was less expensive then. Should I condescendingly explain how holiday sales work?
4. You are not the authority on what is considered a deal or not, despite your pretentious comments to that effect. You actually post plenty of terrible "deals" along with some good deals.

Most of us posting deals who are not staff don't do it full time like you do. I don't know if you just farm rep or have a lot of stock in SD, but you should realize most people aren't as invested in the success of their threads getting SD referral credit. Most people aren't going to spend an hour researching the price history of every item sold on here in the past 6 months to verify what we are posting meets your lofty standards of what is considered a deal.

But, thanks for entering threads you don't agree with to make sure people know you don't think that it's a deal - we sure appreciate your expertise!

I'm so confused with ports these days. Does anyone know if this can be charged using usb c port. I see the old barrel connector but it would be nice not carrying around a large power brick.
