Screw it.. I just admit I have a problem and surrender that I have no power over it... That' what AA does right? Or is that the flat tire company?

I didn't have a "chugga, chugga" guitar... and now I do.

Adorama reward points and 5% off for using my credit line made it too hard to resist. Out the door for 165.

Feel and playability was good on my Dinky, and if you just have realistic expectations for the pickups and tuning machines you'll have a great time with this guitar.

How easy is it to swap out the humbuckers on this?

A few details...
This guitar is stained, not painted. It just looks flat black in the pictures, but in person you can feel the pores in the wood and see the grain.
The neck is roasted as well as the fingerboard.
Jackson is a Fender brand, but for the same price, their quality control is a lot better than Squier.
In person this will look and feel like a much more expensive guitar!
Repped for a slick deal.

Pickups are the same generic super high output humbuckers Jackson uses in all their cheap guitars, which means they've got a lot of gain, but the bridge sounds muddy if you play clean.

Pickups can be swapped as easy as any other guitar...they're standard size humbuckers.

Can any guitar experts give their thoughts on this Jackson vs the Epiphone Les Paul Special II that was the same price ($169) a couple days ago?

Maybe some pros and cons of each, or different use cases?

Thanks in advance!

They don't look anything alike, but will sound very similar. 90% of the sound of any guitar is the pickups, and both Epiphone and Jackson put really hot humbuckers in their low-end guitars that have a similar sound. As mentioned above, that's great for playing high-gain, but the bridge pickup will sound kind of muddy and midrangey when played clean.

The Jackson is a higher-end guitar for the price and IMO will play better. Reasons: The Les Paul Specials don't have a contoured body. They're just a big slab of wood, so they're less comfortable to play than Dinkys, which have both a belly cut and a arm contour. The Jackson has a roasted neck, which is a higher-end feature. The Jackson balances better. The Epi will have some neck dive because the front strap button is farther back.

Things that might be better or worse for you:

The Jackson has a vibrato (universally misnamed a "tremolo" because Leo Fender got confused), the Epiphone doesn't. This means the Epiphone will be easier to keep in tune unless you deck the trem on the Jackson, which requires some work (either stronger springs or lighter strings). But then you don't get a trem.

Low-end Epiphones have a slightly shorter scale (24.75 - "Gibson scale") which is a bit easier to play if you have small hands. Jacksons have a slightly longer scale (25.5 - "Fender scale"), which is better if you want to tune down. They both have thin necks.

The Jackson has that nice oil finish, but that Epi has the flamed sunburst.

If you get a Les Paul Special, DO NOT get the Special 1 with the wraparound bridge. The individual strings are not adjustable and you will never get it intonated right without a new bridge. The Special II has the Tune-O-Matic bridge where each string is adjustable.

Mine just arrived in the mail… be warned that this is 100% brown and not even remotely close to the image. It's so far off that I feel I ordered it on wish. Box arrived having been clearly opened and barely taped back shut with different tape. Neck needs adjusted, as the low e string has a terrible rattle. I'll take a closer look at it for potential damage in the daylight.

I think this is a pretty great guitar for the price. The action is low, looks cool, I like the roasted neck against the black body, looks good. The frets were annoying in that they are not smooth across the top surface, but was easily fixed with some 600 grit sandpaper and some steel wool. I set it up decked to avoid the tuning issues some folks mentioned. I passed it around at dad band night and the whole group thought it was good for the price
