No membership required for the one at Best Buy either. If you're already a member, you get it at $1049, if you aren't, you add the membership to cart and get the MacBook plus membership for $1099

Very nice deal here too. Moreso for non-costco members. I have a best buy local to me so this made more sense.

why are all these recent apple laptops $1000s of dollars..... $700-$800 at most

Because they are better quality. My mom and mother in law are using macbook air that are from like 2016ish and they still work perfect. Im no apple fanboy but apple laptops are better than basically all windows laptops (I use both).

Having less RAM than a Samsung phone seems like a daylight robbery by Apple.

I wish Macbooks' design would let you add more or have deals that can upgrade at a relative price.
