Not knowing what many of these smell like is a question for me and it seems others. I know that Costco has their great return policy and will let you buy a fragrance and return it if you wish, but that's a bit of a pain in my view. It's nice that they do it however. But for those that would prefer to smell it first, the department stores carry some of these and I've found that Sephora has many.

What I like about Sephora is that their sales people are not nearly as aggressive and y they have test strips available for the shoppers. It makes smelling the scents much less stressful and easier than in some department stores. I've purchased a few scents during these sales as a means of getting ahead on Christmas shopping, both dollar wise and task wise.

I know the TF scents are always popular and the Oud Wood is at this price every so often and seems to be a great price. The bitter peach is also a great price. But those scents aren't for everyone, however for those that like them it's nice to get a higher end product at a good price. Jo Malone is pretty popular as well, but I'm not sure how popular that scent is.

In my opinion, buying small sample vials of decanted fragrances is the best way to try a scent before committing to the purchase of a big bottle. Sampling in stores is free save for your time, but the stores near you might not have the fragrances you're interested in. And buying through Costco with the expectation of returning is more effort than it's worth, personally. Before you drop $100+ on 6.8 oz bottle of fragrance, it's worth spending $3 to make sure you actually like and want to wear the scent first.

Decants can be bought relatively cheaply from a number of online stores, and there's even a small cottage industry of people decanting and selling directly on sites like Reddit (r/FragDecants/) and Facebook Marketplace. Not every seller will have the selection of scents or the pricing you want, so it's worth shopping around. Personally, I like microperfumes.com and decanthouse.com, but you can search online for other reputable recommendations for your area.

If you were like me and wanted to dip your toes into fragrances, I'd recommend doing some searching online on sites like r/fragrance and fragrantica.com for popular and recommended scents that interest you. Build up a list of a handful of scents you're interested in, then buy small decants of each. You'll quickly discover what scents you like, what scents you avoid, and what scents you're willing to buy a full Costco-sized bottle of. Plus, it's always fun to get a batch of new and unique scents to smell; it's like a cheesecake platter of fragrances laugh out loud.

(man's perspective)
For these brands you probably get better info from Youtube than the Costco reviews, fwiw. There are a couple fragrance-dedicated channels that have reviewed all the big names in the fragrance world.

This guy puts out good info and has covered a wide variety of fragrance: https://www.youtube.com/@ThePerfumeGuy
This guy keeps it real, too: https://www.youtube.com/@papistyle6479
But any "_____ review" video is better than nothing (or the largely uninformed Costco reviews)

For men, I highly recommend Nishane Hacivat as it's probably not like anything else you own (even if you own Creed Aventus, they're fairly different and stand on their own). It's good for most any situation. Nishane's uniqueness as far as the scents they offer are an easy 10/10 - check out Nishane Ege if you are able to find a deal on it, as well.

Kilian is an extremely highly regarded brand as well in the fragrance world and their uniqueness is right up there. I only own Apple Brandy but several others in their line score high marks with the youtubers. Most are Unisex unless specified otherwise.

MFK - I think I bought BR540 extrait + Oud Satin Mood from Costco on a previous deal. Expensive, but worth it... having 1 or 2 MFK scents in your arsenal pays dividends imo.

Tom Ford Oud Wood is a timeless classic and one of the GOATs, but 3.4oz is a bit much as it is not a "more the merrier" scent you can freely over-spray without consequences. 1.7oz bottle would probably be more than enough if you can find a deal on it.

True from a hygiene perspective. However at some level of status, a good fragrance becomes almost a necessity.

I don't think you can get a sample shipped for $3. Shipping cost itself is 1-2$. And then you have to buy a vial, bubble wrap, labor, and the fragrance itself.

if a status has to be calculated based on fragrance, better run away from those kind of friends and family

This has been going on for a little while now. Last week I picked up a few bottles of the Terre D'hermes. Really looking for to seeing how it is.
