How quickly does the Moen unit it detect leaks? Seems like it has different/broader capability to detect leaks without sensors but identification would be slower and less specific. Is that right?
That being said, this smart meter device is better than your typical DIY home automation device. The product is nicer, more robust, more reliable, and the app and usability is just very clean. I don't have to question the readings. I don't have to troubleshoot the whole system to eliminate other things that would be wrong with the system to validate if a "trip" of the device is a true issue. The thing just works and works every time. It's a vetted and finished product if you know what I mean.
If I lose wifi, I get an alert. If I see unusual water usage, I see to what extent and for how long in a nice interface. There are daily test routines. The logging/history works. It's just a good overall product.
Plus if you have a water leak in into your toilet bowl or anywhere else in your system where you don't have a water sensor, then you're covered. You don't have to worry about replacing batteries in your water sensor or if there's communications going on between your various sensors and your hub. The thing just works.
I agree the extras are nice but at what cost? Most people will have to have this professionally installed at $200 - $400. Plus it's a closed system that may or may not still be working 5 years from now. Or worse a subscription. If it was more open/standard ZWave or ZigBee I'd be all over it. But for the money, ease of install, and open standards I'll go with the $100 Dome shutoff. Plus if this thing dies you have to go through it all again to replace while a Dome snaps off and back on.
I understand it needing to be within the "flow" of the water to do it's smart stuff. I just wish it was cheaper and more open.
It is funny when my wife takes a shower longer than 15 minutes and it alerts me that it is shutting off - she should shower quicker
Finally, when I first got this installed, I also happened to get a new Hot water heater installed. Right after, I was noticing weird readings on the Moen and subsequent spike in my water bill. Turns out that my water heater needed a check valve on the cold water system because the new water heater was causing minor backflow (or something - I am not an expert. It had a thermal expansion tank installed, but still there was something odd going on). Was able to confirm this by watching the meter at the street spin in both directions - yikes. Using the Moen, I was able to verify that the sinning meter issue was resolved and all pipes were flowing properly.
Sure, I could have figured this out without the Moen, but since my bills are Quarterly, the Flo helped me identify this within a week - keeping me from having to argue hundreds or thousands of $$ in "fake" water usage.
To the insurance question - we have State Farm and they don't offer a discount, but I know others definitely do - so check!
Does this have a little turbine in the path of the flow or is the pipe completely clear?

In its defense - none of my other outdoor smart gadgets do well at these temperatures either.
