I've never had wyze fail, and it opens fast to the live view. They take up to 128GB micro SD cards. I bought one for each camera, and it auto records over itself once full. Enough for about 2 weeks of steady hd footage. I've had great luck with the refurbished V3 cams. They have the flood lights and other cool stuff now too. I even bought the robovac. Haven't had a bad product from them yet, and customer service is easy to deal with.
Gotcha, I'll look around for a single base camera and give it a shot. My only concern with wyze is that data breach they had due to poor security but I'll just throw it on a guest network. All I need is a picture notifications and I'm good

Yeah, that was unfortunate. I think, and hope they learned their lesson. They update them very frequently now. Best of luck to ya!

If someone takes the camera I assume you can't access any footage?

If you have the cloud service you can, but without the subscription you'd only get a snapshot picture of the motion.

Cloud storage is almost a requirement for these.

Local storage is a joke. Takes a solid minute just to load up a video. Cloud videos are instant to view.
People walk by one of mine all the time and it never goes off.

$60 double refurb pack from woot.
They're probably worth about $20 each honestly.

Gotcha ok, well a picture preview is handy at least and all I need. Arlo gives nothing without a subscription and all I want is a quick preview before it attempts to load an app cause that usually delays or fails (arlo fails the most)

just want something with free visual notifications
Reolink is another alternative brand with functional offline and cloudless functionality. I used to be a huge nest fan, used wyze, Arlo and Samsung cameras over the last 10 years and reolink is decent if you are looking for lower costs and no need for monthly fees to get what you need. They typically have sd card options and DVR abilities if you need to go that route. They aren't the best at all but for the price they are a decent alternative and work pretty well.

Thanks! I'll look into them too, are you happy with the notifications they provide? I'm so annoyed with Arlo and their blank camera went off notification. And then the thumbnail would fail to update in the app and recorded video was locked to a single device 🙄

I've had the version 1 of blink cameras and just recently bought some eufy ones and they are night and day compared to these. Plus I even had the og sync module so storage is free. You couldn't pay me to go back to these. They take forever to load live view and once loaded, there's no one there to see. Also not many options at all in the app compared to other battery powered brands.

These are good for recording but terrible if you need to quickly open your cameras. They take forever to load.
I can attest to this. Live view on these are horrendous.

I just use Wyze cams. They are by far the best cameras for the money in my opinion. The V3 cams are awesome, and you can get them for cheap on sale, especially on woot from time to time.

FYI. You probably know this, but Wirecutter is running full speed from Wyze now.
