Black Mesa is so worth it. Somehow feels like a brand new game while also like you are playing the original at the same time. I do not think they could have done it any better. Most remakes either stray too far from the original or adhere so closely to it there are no improvements. These fools pulled some black magic with Black Mesa.

Now, no clue what is different about Black Mesa vs the Definitive Edition.

According to Wikipedia, the Definitive Edition was a free update for owners of the game and had to do with some lighting upgrades and revamps of non-Xen levels.

I don't know all the details, but I think it's a big credit to Valve that they allowed this game to go out as a commercial release.

Wait, so is this a full remake of HL1? I feel dumb for asking… I read the description and it seems like a complete fan-made remake of the entire game, but I'm reading some comments and reviews and for a bit confused. Any clarification would be appreciated.

Correct, it is a full remake of HL1, fully endorsed by Valve. It was done by a development team called Crowbar Collective.

I played it back in January from start to finish with my Xbox One controller and it worked fine. I might have had to use a console command or modify an ini file. I followed a Steam Community guide. I also remember remapping some of the buttons. The controls were a bit dated, but still usable. There's even aim-assist, but it's kind of wonky.
