so what's the consensus on the airs now? I've seen so many issues with the display cables being damaged from normal use which causes the display to stop working. and now that they've been out for a while, it's becoming more apparent since it is "time" that was needed to see this issue. does anyone know if apple did anything in the m2 airs to prevent this? ppl say that the airs will last 5-6 years... well not if the display ribbon cable isn't properly protected and fails due to damage from normal usage. i'm sure an apple consumer will just be like "pay for the apple care" but then it's like... ??? i'm buying a product that is defective and apple care is basically required now? it's crazy how many ppl say apple products are quality products but then they always say you better get apple care tho... if it was quality.. u wouldn't need apple care

Just commenting on this my M1 Air with a shot screen. I closed it at my desk and woke up with a large black bar through my screen. Quoted $600-$800 to fix it. I can either try a cheap $200 eBay panel repair with the risk of breaking it or just suck it up and buy an M2. Either way, was pretty upset to have one of the most essential parts of this machine give up on me after two years. Hoping to hear something else about display fixes otherwise I'm going to have to suck it up and spend extra on AppleCare

I haven't heard anything about display cables being problematic in M1 MacBook airs. There was some controversy with the 2016-2017 MacBook Pro like what you describe, and the cable was lengthened in 2018. I believe that the m1 controversy was over displays that were cracking, and it was found that when this happened there was usually one of those webcam sliding covers or debris that was the cause. Are you sure you aren't maybe conflating these two things?

I can only add my personal experience, that my M1 hasn't had any problems.

Apple used to make classic ipad, MacBook that would last 10 years. SE and iPad 9 are last of them.

Now its T series device designed to destroy right to independent repair.
pretty much.

ohh they know what they r doing. they r not hiring substandard engineers. the design is done so that product lasts 2-3 yrs max.
perhaps u can say that the engineers are sub standard that they cannot design something that exactly fails in 2 yrs and instead fails at 1.5laugh out loud.
That's the unknown, isn't it? Is Apple run by businesspeople making choices that screw their customers, or do they hire incompetent engineering managers to make bad decisions. I'm going with stupidity rather than malice, but if the result is the same, is it a distinction without a difference?

Question: if you have a bad experience with Apple's product and don't trust Apple's product. Why do you want to keep buying Apple?
I used ThinkPads exclusively for over a decade. Quality on these started to drop until my X13 just stopped working. This was my first Apple computer ever. I was blown away at the processing power behind the M1 chip and the battery life. I can't go back to Windows after using MacOS for coding and other web work.

There is great value in these machines, I just hate how Apple treats all of their users the same. I'm not some idiot that dropped this machine or broke it, yet I'm forced to go through the same chat process and being treated like I damaged the machine despite the display cable issue applying to a lot of users.

In any case, it lasted me two years and bought it for $750 open box. I'll probably turn it into a server in clamshell mode or something.

Yeah per my previous comment I'm thinking this is what will happen. Considering turning it into a Plex/NAS type deal. Just not sure how the power consumption will look.

And Best Buy sold me a "new" dishwasher that had water in it 💦
They test them for qc purposes. Sometimes water remains in the lines. Same happened when we bought a dishwasher from Costco. We unpacked it ourselves- it was definitely brand new.

8GB RAM, 256GB SSD for $750?
You can get a mini PC for $100 with that spec.

I have a cheap HP that has lasted me 5 years. The only thing that needed to be replaced was the battery which I got compensated through Costco warranty. The new battery functions like the old one did day one. I wouldn't be surprised I can squeeze out another 3-4 years out of this before the CPU is too outdated. I would hope something like this would last a lot longer than 5-6 years.

I'm not criticizing Apple. I have an iPhone and generally find their build quality vastly superior to other companies, especially for portable devices, but it's weird that people justify paying extra by saying it'll "last longer". I just don't find that to be the case anymore considering how cheap and better PC hardware has gotten over the years.
Agree with quality being better from competitors now. I did notice my 2012 MBP lasting about 10 years at a time when other Wintel notebooks would last maybe 4 years at best. Then again I am not an intense user either.

Biggest difference for a non power user would probably be battery life, if that's not an issue for you then I would not bother
On the other hand, consider selling the Intel MacBook while it is still worth something. Intel MacBook prices are falling stupid fast. Also, I've noticed higher failure rates with the 2016-early 2020 Intel MacBook Pros. I'm guessing the A-team at Apple was working on the new ARM MacBooks and the not A-team was working on the last Intel MacBooks.

No 8GB with 256GB. Too slow. That's why they are selling it. On October, new M3 chip is coming.
let me guess, you've never used these before and are making assumptions based on windows specs?

find me a windows laptop at this price range with better benchmarks, keyboard, screen, speakers, battery life, and resale value. you can't. specs aren't everything especially for these new m series soc with unified memory

That's because Apple uses two 128GB nand chips for the m1 and one 256GB nand chip for the m2. If you want that speed back then you'll have to upgrade to the 512GB model.
