Great price on a fast, rugged, waterproof, ultra-high capacity, ultra-small portable solid-state drive. I've had one of these USB C 3.2 thunderbolt drives for a while now and absolutely love it! Have it attached to my Nvidia Shield Pro (which is also on sale right now) and holds my entire movie and TV show collection on its Plex server.

T7 Shield is a TLC drive that can sustain 800MB/s sequential writes through the entire disk: https://www.anandtech.com/show/18...-upgrade/3

X8 is a QLC drive that sustains 800MB/s sequential wriets only for a short period of time before dropping to 150MB/s: https://www.anandtech.com/show/16...-onthego/6

There is a very big performance difference if you are actually going to write a large amount of data to the drive.
I have two x8 2tb and they are super slow if you are copying or moving a lot of data at one time. I thought they were bad, but they speed up if you transfer smaller amounts of data. Not ideal for a backup IMHO.

I switched to the Samsung T7 Shield and enjoy much better performance.

Or just buy a cheap nvme and e enclosure. 😉

the crucial is just a nvme drive in a case, so I suppose its shuckable but its not cheap. basically the crucial p3 in a case.. https://realhardwarereviews.com/c...-review/3/

Any good deals you recommend for a fast 8TB SSD?

Prefer to use it as an external so I can move it from computer to computer but if price is better for internals I guess I could put it into a enclosure myself.

With some luck, we might be able snag one of these for $150 by the time BF/CM comes around...

Can these be opened in order to extract proper nvme drive?

Yes, but why? The drive inside is a Crucial P1, which is very slow for an NVMe drive. You can get a 4TB Crucial P3 for the exact same price (minus the external enclosure) which is a much better drive. This won't save money like shucking an external HDD, and you get a lot less performance.

This isn't a p1. P1 goes up to 2 tb only. This is a p3...

I guess I didn't realize the prices went down so much...

I think I read at some point they put out a revision that's integrated with a usb controller, not a SSD with an adapter. But that may have been the X6?

It seems the better deal to aim for is the 4TB Samsung T7 for $150 on Black Friday. This one going down another 10 bucks doesn't seem that big of a deal, especially if Samsung's is so much better.
