Do you have a link for the falafel balls?
I read online (Costco user Facebook thread) that you need to run it a few times without food to get rid of the plastic smell. I ran it twice @400 degrees on the 20 minute setting. No plastic smell after that.

Mine had a plastic smell for the first 40 minutes of use. IIRC the manual mentions this and to run a 20 minute cycle. Mine took two cycles and was fine after that. No problems now several months and many uses later.
For me it has. I bought one about five years ago and it is still going strong.
