I have a PS5, Switch, Apple TV connected to my TV with an LG Soundbar and it's handled by eARC I believe. Switching inputs is kind of slow, but I don't know if that's just my TV. The most annoying thing for me is sometimes the Soundbar will randomly switch to Optical and I need to cycle thru the options to get it back to eARC.
Would a receiver help with any of that? Would it let me plug in my record player to use the soundbar as an input too?

I'd be really interested in any links you have where someone could actually hear their front speakers getting less power when the surrounds and atmos speakers were being asked to output loud, full power audio.

I use my receiver to power a 7.1 surround system and connect a PC, game consoles, record player, audio tape player, and Korg keyboard. If you're new you might consider this low cost experiment: older name brand receivers can often be found at thrift stores in the $20 to $50 range (might not have HDMI but if so very unlikely to support 4K) and they usually carry speakers too. See how you like the sound quality compared to the sound bar. You can always upgrade to a modern receiver later and keep using the same speakers and find additional and/or better speakers along the way
Used receivers from individual sellers on places like Craigslist or OfferUp tend to be more modern (often w/ 1080p HDMI) and the sellers might throw in the surround speakers with sub as part of a package deal for cheap
