You're comparing a game console to a dedicated 4K Blu-Ray player. The UB820 has the HDR Optimizer and a better processor. Moreover, you get Dolby Vision with it. Don't get me wrong, the PS5 is great for most people. But a lot of 4K Blu-Ray collectors are enthusiasts and want the absolute best picture quality they can get. That's where the UB820 comes in.

Sadly I have an anecdote in the opposite direction. I've owned my player for a few years and didn't touch it in the last 10 months and now it won't read any discs, and of course it happened out of warranty.

But because I love the quality and convenience of having a dedicated player so much, I decided to jump on this deal and buy another one, this time with an extended warranty plan from Amazon (because Panasonic's original warranty doesn't cover labor nor shipping but the extended one does).

Not sure if I'm crazy spending this much again on another unit when the first one failed so unexpectedly, or if I'm an idiot for buying the extended warranty, but hopefully this one lasts longer.

I say open the player up so you can see the laser disc head reader. blow some compressed air on it. but maybe the read head no longer moves up/down on the track. This would prevent the read head from going to the beginning of the disc.

The place this player really helps is with projectors because of the tone mapping capabilities. I have done side-by-side comparisons and adding this to a JVS RS-540 and it makes an amazing difference and gets it close to the performance of an NX7.

Slick deal indeed. But if one's 4K TV does not have HDR nor Dolby vision, would this be worth it?
No. Unless you are buying for the future where you plan to get a large 4K TV with Dolby Vision.

For example, I don't have a 4K player yet, but for the last 6 years have only bought 4K + Blu-rays movies. I finally got a 4K TV a couple years ago. Maybe this will be the year I finally get the 4K player.

Basically this is the only player that will handle all the various 4K formats and 3D. You can get cheaper models that will do HDR10 and Dolby Vision, but not HDR10+. There are even cheaper models that won't do Dolby Vision.

not necessary. It's definitely a high end Bluray player but it's a dedicated one while the demand is shrinking.
Demand is shrinking, but for the people who truly care, the demand will remain.

I'll gladly stream kids movies and such with them and not care. But when I want to watch and experiences movies for me, I go downstairs to the 5.1.4 (soon to be 5.2.4) system with 85" Dolby Vision and feel immersed in what I'm watching. The quality of a 4k disc (or file) vs a netflix stream is just not comparable when a good system is in play.

No doubt tons of people don't care about that.

Ripping 4K movies? Yes, ripping blu-rays is preferable, but 4K, that is a big file, and a large bits per second stream.
Yes of course rip 4k movies. Large drives are also cheap so the size of a 4k movie doesn't matter as much. I'm having trouble following what you are trying to say. Grammar seems off/wrong.

That is odd. Possibly lens dirty? Also look to see if there is a software update if possible.

Yeah, I suspect it's probably the head that's gone bad, but I didn't have time back then to look into solutions and figure out are snake oil vs. real fixes.

I'll try opening the player up and blowing some compressed air as suggested.

It's just odd to me for the player to fail so soon when I've barely put any "mileage" on it, and also, I bought another 4K disc player around the same time (UBP-x800M2, long story) and that one still works, but I could've just had bad luck here.

Anyhow, despite my unfortunate situation, I've still pulled the trigger on this deal so hopefully that tells folks who are on the fence here how high I value this player.

Why are these so expensive? Just buy a PS5 or better yet, a $65 bluray drive and rip your movies.
Very few, if any, $65 drives will rip a UHD movie reliably. These days, you are looking at $150 to get one of the UHD capable Pioneer drives, and that has to be from someone who can cross-flash it (there are sellers on the MakeMKV forum).

In addition, there are only a few (not cheap) devices that will play back a UHD movie file with all the correct HDR10/Dolby Vision getting to the display/projector, and the ATMOS/DTS-X sound being sent to an AV Receiver.

The Panasonic UB820 or UB420 are for people that have set up a home theater and want to get the most out of their theater experience. It is for people who want to put in a disc and watch a movie and know that they are seeing movie in its best quality with the best quality surround sound.

I wonder if the PS5 has vision for movies only. Even when it didn't support Atmos for games, it did for movies. I get it's a dedicated player and I have my own as well, but if vision is what the deal breaker is for someone thats interested in a 4k player that would help.

Does this player automatically switch from Dolby vision to non vision content. Because if it doesn't, I see no reason to get rid of my Sony x800 M2 despite the occasional freezing issues. But having to turn on vision back and forth is a pain in the ass and might be worth the extra money for that alone if it auto switches.

I have this question, too. That is, will it play a 4K movie on a hard drive that was ripped from a disc?

Try the settings in this video to see if it cures the freezing. I have the X700/M and have no issues using the settings suggested here, and many in the comments claim that this cured their issues. The Dolby Vision still needs to be changed manually though, and the Panasonic does all that automagically for ya.

Any idea how long abt will take to fulfill orders

Don't wanna be waiting months but Amazon is more expensive since abt has the code
Abt will ship within hours. I've ordered from them and gotten same day delivery but it's through their local delivery service. But out of state would be no longer than 24 hours with tracking.
