2. Get another number for data ONLY. Switch to the cheapest you can find every a few months. You are always a new user because you don't need to port in your number for it.
With two SIMs active in one phone, you can use one for calls/texts, and the other for data.

Redpocket has a $60 annual plan for 500min, 500 texts & 500MB /mo. I believe you can choose T-mobile/AT&T network though. So, less flexibility with the plan but more with networks.
I actually have 3 plans on 3 different networks. One has a lot of data, the others two only 500MB - 1GB data just in case. To me, peace of mind for ~$10/mo is great. Definitely useful in national parks.

I've been on this plan for 2 years and it's quite solid. AT&T towers and no apparent slowdowns. You can use the BoostOne app to easily get at least $10 per month in credit towards your bill (takes about a minute per day). In the past, you could easily get $30 per month in credits, so I've got about $400 in current credits which should cover me for the next few years.
If you ever run into a situation where you need more data in a given month, you can add an 'Add on Pack' of data (it's like $10 for another 5gb).
Boost do NOT offer Wifi calling on T-Mobile, so if you want/need Wifi calling, skip them.
Boost generally sucks when it comes to support. Consider yourself warned...
