It worked, but was a minor PITA.
Also, if you are doing a trade-in, be aware that if you use gift cards and cash/cc, the trade-in amount will often be given as a gift certificate.

Say you bought the iPhone for 1100 and paid $1000 in CC and $100 in Apple Gift Card. If Your trade in value is $400, then $300 will back as CC refund and $100 back to your gift card balance
In other words you can't covert your gift cards balance to cash through trade in route
