I picked this one up today and can chime in on a few quick things.

Yes, it's not the quickest thing, however it can be very fast with some small tweaks.

1) Opted out of S mode - pretty painless.

2) debloated - just manually uninstalled the preinstalled apps. Im sure there's a quicker way to do it with a script.

3) quick adjustments to turning off privacy, notifications, things that send data to Microsoft.

4) 4GB of memory is soldered and added a 8GB DDR stick on the open RAM Slot. System recognizes 12GB now.

5) Open m2 SSD slot - Popped in a old 250 GB Samsung 970 Plus. Boots perfectly and much faster plus have the built in 128GB eMMC for storage. The SSD operates at 3500Mbps where as the eMMC storage is at around 300Mbps.

6) There is also a SD card slot for more storage.

Includes 1 year of office 365 which is solid value if you were already paying $70 a year for it.

The only con I find is the screen. It is VERY lackluster and leaves alot to be desired. It is usable, but thinking of plugging in a monitor if I was going to do any lengthy work on it.

USB C only does data, no charging or display port, however I knew that going in.

It is light and plasticky in a good way and the blue makes it seem more expensive than it is.

Yes I used Macrium Reflect to clone the disk, then the below instructions change the boot disk to the new SSD drive. Afterwards, formatted the 128GB eMMC storage using the disk management tool.

Step 1. Type "UEFI" in the start menu.

Step 2. Click "Change Advanced Startup Option

Step 3. Click "Restart Now" in the Advanced Startup" section

Step 4. After the computer reboots it will come up to a blue screen with "Continue", "Turn off your PC", "Use a device" and "Troubleshoot". Go ahead and click "Troubleshoot"

Step 5. Click "Advanced Options" and click "UEFI Firmware Settings" and click "Restart"

Step 6. This will open the BIOS screen. Go to the "Boot" menu and make sure that option "eMMC" is on the bottom and your SSD is above it.

Not sure why people make such a big deal out of this, let alone a factor in the buying decision. You can simply opt out if it during your initial set up.

By the time you tweak the software, add the additional RAM, add a faster SSD…and still end up with a slow laptop…painful.

A 6-year old Intel Core i5 8th-Gen U (mobile) CPU is TWICE as fast as the Pentium N6000. I can go to a local PC recycler and walk out with an old donated laptop that's twice as fast as this for pocket change.
It all depends on your needs. This laptop has a brand new battery and an efficient 6W CPU, meaning this will run for 10+ hours on battery. And it will be silent because it is fan-less. A 6 year old used laptop will come nowhere close, and it's tiny fan will be emitting an annoying high-pitched whine cooling it's 15w+ CPU. This Lenovo also has WiFi 6 and a 1 year warranty, something a 6 year old laptop will not have. It is also pretty light for a 15" laptop, a 6 year old 15" laptop will likely be heavier.

While it seems like this laptop could be made passable for an extra $40 or so, I think this Microcenter deal is much better if you can take advantage of it
https://slickdeals.net/f/17063140-microcenter-in-store-lenovo-ideapad-1-14-laptop-computer-cloud-grey-amd-ryzen-5-5500u-2-1ghz-processor-8gb-ddr4-3200-onboard-ram-256gb-micro-center-229-99

Same laptop family but comes with 8gb of ram, 256gb of real SSD space and a CPU that is ~4x as fast. It's only 14" vs 15.6" which is a drawback for some, it also lacks a number pad. The out of the box price difference is $80 but that drops to about $40 if you consider the all but mandatory upgrades.

Thank you for the review! Do you think it's usable for secondary school kids? My son is getting to learn Scratch

Most definitely, I've been using it the past few days and the battery life is really good. I've been finding myself reaching for this one when I just need to do some casual YouTube or browsing.

That's why I use metal cups instead of paper, plastic, or glass. Lasts almost indefinitely and less trash.
This laptop reminds me of articles that show examples where cheap items actually cost more in the long run. For example... what would the buyer do after the office runs out in a year? There are better options such as used Dell laptops, but $150 price point is hard to beat.

Not a good product. It feel good for few months but you will regret the 150$ purchase later. If you are going to just browse or watch movies, get a android tablet or Ipad.

It this powerful enough to run zoom meeting app, edge with about 2 dozen tabs open and an email client (mailspring) in parallel? I understand ram is upgradable, but how is the CPU performance?

The CPU would be mid range for a laptop from 2013. The i7 CPU in my reasonably powerful late 2013 is 66% faster. This would have been a lower end CPU in 2016. I would suggest the microcenter deal if you can get it.

Yes, any chromebook and lower end laptop like this are made for that

No, see my post a few comments above (about 4hr ago). The one you linked certainly looks like a better deal as well (sufficient memory, an actual SSD, and 2x the CPU). However, for my money I would spend the $250 and get the one I linked.

The memory RAM speed is the slowest in its class. DDR4-2933 with CAS 21 rating. In 2011, it was DDR3-1066 with CAS 7 rating.

I went into my local Costo store to check out this laptop but decided not to get it:

1. The display is lackluster but this is expected for a TN panel and performance is in line with what you would expect for a $150 laptop.

2. The laptop is light (not heavy) and the keyboard is decent although not backlit. Not that I would expect a backlit keyboard with a $150 laptop.

3. The deal breaker for me was the poor touch pad. Trying to do 2 finger scroll is very frustrating. Some times it will not scroll. Some time it will scroll and then stop scrolling. When trying to restart scrolling, the trackpad recognize the motion as a click to select and opened up another web page. Overall, frustrating. Now, I did not go into touch pad settings to adjust the sensitivity or the speed or acceleration.

Maybe the unit on display has a faulty touch pad. So I would suggest going to the store and trying it out first if you have that option.

I ended up getting the HP 15.6" i5-1335 laptop for $500. With better IPS touch screen, 16G DDR4 and 512G SSD. The touch pad is so much better especially with the ability to do scrolling using the touch screen. Well worth the extra $350 IMHO

Someone has obviously been fortunate enough to not have bought cheap Chinese crap before. bounce
