Tough call, one problem is there are barely any wifi7 clients, and to add insult to injury the BE96 isn't even ASUS' top wifi router nor their top "rapture" line - that would be the GT-BE98 which probably will be $799 or more. And, like wifi6, it may not be until the 2nd wave of wifi7 routers that routers really get the full capability spectrum as ASUS just guessed what the final spec would be.

If you buy this, you are basically guaranteed the best for what is actually usable now, maybe in a few years when wifi7 is common and ASUS is on second revision upgrade then.

Both is the correct answer, if you have a >1000sqft space

Should I go two of these for mesh or something cheaper for the second node?
Depends what you are going to use the node for. A good cheaper second node alternative is the GT-AX11000 PRO, but that will not carry 6ghz band. However, if you plan to use 6ghz only in proximity of the main GT-AXE16000 router, then that doesn't matter anyway.

If you don't plan to use 6ghz at all, you can get away cheaper with two GT-AX11000 PRO

Moving to a 2500sqf, 2-stories house shortly. Will this give me a good coverage for the whole house?

I'm not a fan of ASUS mesh or even using multiple ASUS access points. I had so many stability issues when I was using ASUS. I still have a single ASUS GT-AC5300 that I have wireless disabled and connected to a Unify system (I'm about to replace this with a Unifi UDM as well). Maybe ASUS is fine with a single unit, but the larger the scale becomes or the more mesh units added, it becomes exponentially unstable. If you have a lot of wired and wireless units, it's very hard to troubleshoot ASUS. I will say that I have quite a large footprint and a lot of network traffic for a consumer grade network, but Unify handles everything without a hiccup. I know I probably sound like a Unifi shill, but I have no vested interest in the company. Just personal annecdotal experience/pain with Asus. Unifi isn't generally cutting edge and I don't game, so I can't really say whether there are limitations, but the hardware is inexpensive for prosumer grade network equipment and is amazingly stable.

Quick question for those that have it. Does it have a built-in VPN server?

Currently have an old router with dd-wrt but I've been slowly using less and less of its features. The one convenience that I do still use is the hosting of a VPN server on the router.

Thanks in advance!

I want to replace my LinkSys EA6900 because the firmware is bugged out and doesn't let me use the package prioritization manager. I thought about upgrading the firmware to Tomato/DD-WRT, etc., but the level of effort versus reward versus risk (of bricking) is not worth for me.

I've been eyeing building a Ubquiti system which would cost me about 2x this, and still not give me the 6E wireless on this. What would you do in my shoes. This or go with the Ubquiti Dream Machine Pro system + Access Points? (~$700-800).
