I've read that the GE Profile Opal 2.0 Nugget Ice Maker has lots of improvements around quality and device hygiene slowing mold growth. Of course the cost is much less for this one but some say its worth it to just get the 2.0 instead of experiencing the hassles that this first gen maker gives. Anyone think or experience otherwise?

When my 1.0 gave out, we decided to pony up the cash for a new one and bought the 2.0 from Best Buy with the 5-year extended warranty so that if we had additional issues, which I expected, we'd be covered. We've had the 2.0 for 15 months or so and it is hugely improved. The water coming out when I clean it looks generally clear. Buildup and mold is not apparent. I can't speak to the condition of the insides because I haven't taken it apart to look, but the improvement they made on removing heat from the system has helped a ton. If I were buying, I'd be waiting for a sale on the 2.0 knowing it is a much improved product.

Cleaned it once upon initial setup and then one other time since then. I only use filtered water from the primo dispensing machines found at numerous retail storefronts and I have no complaints. Works like a champ and gets ice going quickly. Use it every day and am glad with my purchase. Don't put tap water into it and you shouldn't have any issues 👍🏻
