Not sold out for me, I see it for $228 in Seattle, WA.

I've read that the GE Profile Opal 2.0 Nugget Ice Maker has lots of improvements around quality and device hygiene slowing mold growth. Of course the cost is much less for this one but some say its worth it to just get the 2.0 instead of experiencing the hassles that this first gen maker gives. Anyone think or experience otherwise?

Buddy of mine uses distilled water to avoid the mineral buildup so less maintenance

While this is a "1.0" model vs. the "2.0", it appears it's a newer model than the original GE Profile Opal ice maker that was released in the last year. Reviews at https://www.geappliances.com/appl...4INAASSTSS only date back 10 months, Amazon lists Date First Available as May 7, 2022. The original Opal looked more like the 2.0 model with the ice basket that slides out the front, this newer 1.0 model is closer to the bullet ice makers that use a bottom reservoir underneath the ice basket, under a flip up lid. Seems like it was made to be a lower cost option alongside the 2.0; 2.0 replaced the original.

I've owned both the 1.0 and 2.0. The 1.0 lasted approximately three years before one of the internal rotating parts gave out. Mold was a serious issue with it - I did not do weekly cleanings as directed, but did do deep cleans every few months. I actually cracked it open and cleaned the insides too. So much mold - it's a wonder the ice it made wasn't literally green.

When my 1.0 gave out, we decided to pony up the cash for a new one and bought the 2.0 from Best Buy with the 5-year extended warranty so that if we had additional issues, which I expected, we'd be covered. We've had the 2.0 for 15 months or so and it is hugely improved. The water coming out when I clean it looks generally clear. Buildup and mold is not apparent. I can't speak to the condition of the insides because I haven't taken it apart to look, but the improvement they made on removing heat from the system has helped a ton. If I were buying, I'd be waiting for a sale on the 2.0 knowing it is a much improved product.

Thanks for the breakdown. This one, however, is not even on the GE Opal website. Strange.

Same here. I used filtered water and got it last time. It was low like this and we love it.

I'd only buy this from Costco because there's a good chance it will fail

Bought this. Ice is good but the thing is loud as hell. Every time you open the lid, even if you dont take any ice, it kicks on and starts making ice and is super loud. Kind of tough when you are watching a movie/show and need a refill and then gotta deal with the noise.

This is the second release of 1.0 (updated) model. Bought it in July for $229 deal of the day on Amazon.

Cleaned it once upon initial setup and then one other time since then. I only use filtered water from the primo dispensing machines found at numerous retail storefronts and I have no complaints. Works like a champ and gets ice going quickly. Use it every day and am glad with my purchase. Don't put tap water into it and you shouldn't have any issues 👍🏻

I got mine the same way. I only use distilled water in it. pretty quiet. I've been happy with it.
