Several deals on dark roasts lately, should be good on that for a while... Any deals on dark roasts decaf? I like to brew 50/50 to cut down on caffeine.

This is my favorite Starbucks brew for everyday use. If you're looking for something with a darker but pleasant flavor, it's great for using in a normal coffee maker but I wouldn't recommend it for espresso use or similar. It's dark without being bitter, definitely has some interesting flavor notes.

The roasting process produces those flavors. It's similar to wine tasting notes of various other fruits while it contains only grape.

If it was fresh coffee, you would enjoy it more during that month. If your satisfied with the freshness that is all that counts. The coffee I buy at the store and at Amazon is usually a year or more by date. One time on Amazon I bought a whole case of coffee and the best by date was three weeks out and they gave me a full refund. The 21 bags I bought from Amazon a couple months ago were all 14-16 months out.
