I am in the market for a new basic desktop, but this does not measure up, although it rates itself "mid-level" storage (at only 256) and "mid-level" RAM (split 4gb/8gb sticks).

I like the mix of peripheral connectivity, but the hardware is less than basic for a serious working desktop.

I'm not sure what you consider a serious working desktop, but unless you are gaming, this will far surpass any work you need to do on it.

The main downside is that this computer is an older generation, this exact same model was old last Black Friday at this price at Staples.

256 is too small to load files from the old PC to the new one, nevermind collecting new data for 2024 2025 and so on. 256 is not serious for a new desktop.

I got the 10th gen i5-10400 version of this several years ago during Black Friday. I formatted and installed Ubuntu Server on it and Plex server. It's been running flawless since then. Tempted to get another to run as Proxmox server at home. I don't think it has enough SATA ports and the PSU power adapter is probably limited to two peripherals.

But ya for simple tasks, these are great computers. I'm not sure how Windows is implemented though, how much bloatware to offset cost... but you should be able to format and do a clean install of Windows 11 and get the drivers from HP.
