If my budget was ~3k this is the PJ I'd buy as even though it's a little long in the tooth at approaching 5 yrs old, it's the best lamp driven PJ epson has (note replacement ELPLP89 lamps are $330 through epson which is the highest current replacement cost lamp.) As my current budget is extremely smaller, I'm waiting (in vain?) for the 3800 to drop to the 1k range as a refurbished unit (w/same 2 yr warranty as new on the projector, lamp is warrantied for ~90 days) replacement lamps are $100 for that and it's supposed to be a very decent shifted 4k projector that holds its own against the 4010 from most people's opinions. I'm currently quite happy with my 3rd or 4th epson projector the 2150 ($60 lamps!) so I can personally wait a bit longer but again to anyone who wants to spend this amount on a PJ: you can't go wrong with the 5050UB (if stock comes back on epson, it's the same price there for people trying to dodge amazon sales tax.)
Edit: forgot to mention the only reason (I'd say) to go for the LS over this is it's a high frame rate gaming projector with hdmi 2.1 and support for 4k@120fps.
I want to replace it. I don't think I need the short throw or ultra short throw feature as the projector is about 12-15' feet from the screen.
What is a 4k good replacement at $2,500 or less? Also, it doesn't need speakers.

This one! Read through the thread and the reviews.

Not entirely. Supposedly the laser only beats it marginally in sharpness. As a current 5020 owner, I can tell you, sharpness is not an issue with a good projector. Mine is 10+ years old and I've never been disappointed in the sharpness. In all other things the 5050 beats the laser especially where it counts...black levels.

I may have to grab this, but I'm tempted to wait until Friday?
Your post kinda proves why it's helpful because people always say something like that but
pixel shifting is not true 4k.
The worth of it is an entirely other rabbit hole topic.

Amazon link and "other sellers".
I did not look on Epson's site because it was not listed in the original post.

If you do some math 2x 1080p is 4M and 1x 4k is 8M pixels. There is no denying the fact the this epson image is not as sharp as a true 4k projector as only half of the pixels are projected. There are other newer projectors that can get close to the black levels of this projector. Pixel shifting <> 4k
