This wasn't my experience when I got in on an earlier version of this deal. The guitar had clearly not been set up at all from the factory. The truss rod was completely loose, and as a result the neck was extremely bowed. The intonation had not been set. The string action was not set. The pickup height was not set. Fortunately i have the tools to adjust all that myself. There is a little bit of fret sprout, but I can't fix that myself because the fretboard has finish on it. The fret ends are smooth, however, so it doesn't bother me. I swapped out the tuners for some Fender locking ones, and now I'm very happy with it.

If you're not able to set it up yourself, just be aware that there's a small risk you may have to swap it out. If you always take a new guitar to a luthier to get it set up, or can do a basic setup yourself (a skill I highly recommend learning) don't worry about it.

A solid deal on a new MIM Fender instrument with his components including pickups. OOTB it should be pretty playable (reasonable action, decent fret ends, etc.).

The Player Telecaster has the six modern saddles that I prefer for better intonation, but purists might want the three brass saddles instead. For the latter, there's the Squier Classic Vibe 50s Tele which is $343 ($310 with Fender Play) for blonde and yellow at Fender's site right now, https://slickdeals.net/f/17087101-squier-classic-vibe-50-s-telecaster-vintage-blonde-344-or-310-with-fender-play . The CV will have a gloss neck instead of the Player's satin.

If there's fret sprout on arrival, I'd swap it for another at seller expense. That's a defect on a new guitar, although it may yet develop later, at which point it's not a defect. A setup might help (typically $50-$75 but YMMV or do it yourself) if you want the action lower, but that's a matter of taste.

I only wish they'd offer this price on one with the dark fretboard (pau ferro, laurel, rosewood, or the like).

Definitely send it back if you get one like that. I know during the 2020 era onwards, the sudden demand for guitars really led to some bad quality control. My own, I'll be at limited, experience with new player series instruments is that they're usually pretty good out of the box. However, if Fender does establish a track record of shipping poorly set up or manufactured instruments under their primary brand then I think it's perfectly warranted for them to lose market share to the many lesser brands and even the clones and counterfeits.
I didn't want to deal with the hassle of a return. Plus there was some speculation here that these were from a pool of guitars with known issues, so I didn't want to risk getting a worse one. In the end, it worked out.

I got the Tele in this deal last year and absolutely love it. I needed to adjust the intonation a bit, but youtube videos and a good tuner made that easy enough.
It really is a great guitar.

I have the Stratocaster "Plus Top"," the latter meaning it has the nice flame top. With the right amp, it's fantastic.

I picked this guitar up on a SlickDeal in 2019 - my first guitar of many off of SD. It still looks and plays great!
Same here -2019 - and gifted to my son. He swears his plays as good as any tele he plays around with.

I took can vouch for the quality of the guitar. This deal has been active for quite a while now. I bought the telecaster a couple of months ago and was very pleasantly surprised that it was perfect right out of the box. Great color and the satin finish neck feels great.

My son is an intermediate player. He's been playing with a Nashville Tele picked from a SD last year. Now I'm looking to get him a Strat for Xmas. Should I get this or the used-mint Aerodyne from Reverb for $599? The extra $70 isn't a big deal. TIA!

Yep agreed. Bought this for my son last year and it looks and plays great. I'm looking for an excuse to get one for myself (if there was any other color available I would jump on it).
How old is your son? I are these okay for youth 9-12?

Really great guitar for the price. Mine was set up ok. I did a complete set up per this video. https://youtu.be/eeLXIh8kRAI?si=FWokqw0CFibrlcfy

Easy to follow and plays way, way better after doing the setup.

Yes. My then-10 y.o. received a Classic Vibe Strat, and it was fine. Use a capo if the far end of the neck is too much of a reach, but he had no problem.

Either would be fine, although I'd lean toward a Telecaster (no tremolo block or tuning issues; simpler pickup arrangement). The Strat, though, has a lot of comfort features.

This is why I didn't send mine back, despite the complete lack of factory set-up. Oh, and I forgot to mention, there's a faintly visible line *underneath* the finish. It's appears to be where they joined two pieces of wood together to make the body. You have to really be looking for it to see it.
