Isn't 1550 filtration supposed to be too hard on furnaces? I was told to use 1100 or 1200 at the most.
These used to be a 3-pack at $29.99 before the price was raised, and now they cut 33% of the product as well. Wonderful times...sigh.
4" filters are actually much less restrictive than 1" ones. After retrofitting from a 1" filter boot to 4", I was able to switch from MERV 8 to MERV 10 while reducing the static pressure drop across the filter from 0.36 to 0.08 in w.c.
ETA: I also get a full 12 months out of each filter. My manometer tells me there's barely any more restriction after all that time. 4" filters get me better filtering *and* reduces total filter cost. Win-win. It should be the standard IMO.

I'd love to hear more about this story. What return box did you use? Every time I have priced out the Hart & Cooley ones, they have to be special ordered and are a pretty big investment over the price of the 1" lipped filters. I do like the free area of the grilles.
Best deal on these is everyday price at Ace. Packaging is for commercial/institutional use; no fancy placard with cellophane wrapping, just the filter.
We paid $8/ea on the 16x25x4 Merv 8[acehardware.com] filters a couple months ago, currently $9.89 at local stores w/ 10% Rewards promo.
They're not at all stores but a deal where available.

The HVAC company installed a Carrier/Bryant FILCABXL0016. They integrated it with a 90* boot and referred to the whole assembly as "25-X-16"-SS-Vertical Filter Boot (25 X 10 Drop)" on the invoice. Our filter is right off the air handler instead of in the return grille. Hope this helps.

How does one retrofit a 1" "filter boot" to be a 4" one? I have the 1" metal grate in the ceiling. Worth the cost?
I have same system and bought this last year when it was same sale.
The filter fits in fine, but because it's not as flexible, it's hard to pull out for replacing.
I had to break some pieces to get it out. I probably won't use it again.

They don't have a metal grate in the ceiling with a filter in it. But the housing (box) that the metal grate is attached to has little rails that the filter sits on so it doesn't get sucked in (I'm sure you're familiar), and hypothetically, that metal box could have been manufactured so that those rails sit 3" deeper in the box. I have not found a way to make it worth the cost yet.

Be careful these 4" filters are actually 4.3" thick. I bought some last time and they don't fit my furnace.
