Settle down people. Its $350 on Amazon. Dont get razzle dazzled with the regular $749 tag at adorama

Checking listed and solds on ebay there is an alarming number of this model listed right now for parts only with various problems like error codes.

It could be a good deal but it could be not great.

I'm probably going to get flac for this but I see a lot of nonsense going on here. There is not going to be noticible audio differences or video differences between receiver brands, given similar DAC and amplifier specs. In the same price class, they are all going to use the same burr brown DACs. These units all put out <.08%THD so by definition the only differences have to lie in that .08%. This is a commodity market. The only real differences are aesthetic and feature set. So find the best price, regardless of brand, that has the feature set for YOU. Sometimes processing can suck, all of them have an off switch. Anyone who says "x" brand sounds terrible most likely needs to look at their room, their setup, or their own prejudice.

You can just call the manufacturer and have them fix/replace

Kinda same thing happened to me. Everything was connected and configured but no sound. TV shows it sends sound to the receiver, but no sound. I had to unplug HDMI cable and plug it back every time I turn TV on. No other troubleshooting methods worked. WTF? It is basic thing to produce sound when on, but no -> go replug hdmi cable !!! Bluetooth was a joke too: literally nothing was able to pair with this receiver. The only exception was macbook pro, but still it would disconnect 5-7 times within one hour. F&%k this sh*t!
Switched to yamaha, everything works as expected, no issues.
Sounds like me. I didn't have this receiver (It was a 636 model) but it was flaky as hell. I have a zone 2 hooked up and the Onkyo would constantly have issues with it. Main 5.1 zone was ok. The 636 had its BT go out and I had to have it repaired (like the HDMI board in an old Onkyo I had many years ago). With my issues on the second Onkyo, I have written them off. I replaced it with a Yamaha TSR-7850 a couple of years ago and it has worked flawlessly.

i haven'[t been keeping up with AV receivers in a while. In the past, all my equipment were IR and i have a Logitech Harmony remote to control everything. Now with Roku, Google TV, FireStick, is there any way to keep my AV setup and still use 1 remote control for everything? Could CEC be used to completely remove RF remotes for streaming devices?
You'll have to play around with your group of devices. I'm in the same boat, love love love Harmony remotes and if you turn CEC/HDMI control on, it tends to mess up the harmony config but only for certain activities that have a device that uses a bluetooth or wifi proprietary remote signal. Kinda sucks when you are trying to only use one remote.

I bought this receiver from Costco almost a year ago for $399. It's still sitting in the box. Should I return it and buy it from Adorama for $100 less, keep the Costco one, or just return it all together and wait for something better to go on sale?

It'll passthrough yes. But if you're doing a PS5 console you should go directly to TV and use eARC back to the receiver for audio.

I am not blown away by this upgrade. Granted I have done nothing else yet - such as change my 5.1 to a 5.1.2. However just the receiver swap - no real perception of change. I have a lot of settings to tweak. I do like the center 'width' setting on. I know my Yamaha had some center width settings - but I could never hear a difference when changing it. This time I can hear it spread the center channel to my FR and FL. In my wide room this sounds nice.

I miss the display of "Dolby Digital" - on the display when playing such content. Was a nice quick "yup, things are working' - now I need to hit an info button on the remote to check.

Menus and navigation are obviously very different. But not bad.

I have not browsed to the receivers web UI yet (different than the app) - that is supposed to have some important and handy settings only found there? Also web UI has a way to backup and restore settings? Will be nice for trying new settings and having a path to revert back.

I would say if just doing a swap - dont expect anything drastic changing with sound (coming from rx-v473).

UPDATE - had some more time to play. Really liking the new "full" sound I am getting turning on the center width. I have a very wide and close seating arrangement - this has really helped with dialog. I do find my sound stage having more ooph for some reason. Might be because i set my surround crossover @ 70 for everything.... was 80 or 90 on the Yamaha. The speaker calibration with mic wants it in the 50-60s.

Happy... just not blown away in awe... if anything it speaks to the quality of the Yamaha.

UPDATE: Not in manual... go to IP address of receiver... ###.###.###.###/websetup.htm --- to access webUi. if prompted for a username/password... its 'ciuser' for both. Not sure what new functions are here - but looks like just an easier way to manage things. You can also backup and update your configuration file. You can also print your current settings.

I get the point of using TV as a monitor. But based on the same idea you could use TV as the hub then route single HDMI to soundbar or dumb amp. No need to worry about if AVR is 4K or any new standard compatible, and one less remote to deal with. Most TVs these days run smart TV OS, can control other devices through HDMI ARC.
You can, and that may be right for you but everyone has different needs. I think the control happens through CEC and the audio goes through ARC/eARC.

But, to answer your original question about why, and there are several reasons... for me it's because most TVs can't do a second zone. Again, not everyone needs this feature but it is great for me... I have a second TV on the other side of the wall that the main TV is on, so I can route one source to the main TV while routing another source to the second TV when necessary (ex. one person wants to watch netflix while someone else wants to play the PS5). Because the Apple TV remote and the PS5 controllers are wireless, someone can just take one into the next room and use that device. It's almost like having 2 PS5s and 2 Apple TVs.

I also have the sound for the second zone going to outdoor speakers. If we're using the second zone on the other TV, I'll mute the sound for zone 2 so my PS5 isn't blasting outside. But if we want music outside, then I will turn them up. Either way, the HDMI still passes audio to the second TV, and with a wireless gaming headset you can still play PS5 in the next room while talking to your teammates.

It's usually very easy to route wires straight through (or up) inside walls (no insulation), so it's easy to get an HDMI cable to a TV on the other side of the wall.

I have an old onkyo from like 15 years ago thats still running strong using 15 year old speakers/subwoofer. Can someone explain to me how that old onykyo would be better than this one? If i'm still using old/dated surround speakers.

I don't have a instrument to test it. But I felt that the low pass filter is not very clean. I set LPF at 80Hz, but I could feel that a lot of 50 Hz signal was fed to my center channel and front R&L channels.
The super low bass signal (10-20 Hz) was not strong as my old receiver. I felt like this receiver does not have good response at super low frequency range. I set both of them at 0db, very thing else also the same. I could see the back and force movement of the subwoofer on the old receiver was a lot stronger than the new one. I was using the test signal from some of the Youtube videos.
If this amp is doing anything in the 10-20hz range, I'd be surprised. Your (externally powered and amplified) sub should be handling those frequencies. You probably need to change the crossover freq on your fronts rather than the LPF. LPF setting is specific to the sub channel of true 5.1/7.1 mixes and does not impact any other channels. Also make sure your fronts arent set to "full range" and that double-bass is off.

The old speakers are probably fine, not much has really changed in speakers. I guess you might be able to get more speakers with this one. The biggest difference is that this receiver likely supports more audio and video formats than your old one.

Yes, it has Zone 2 audio and video.

I use the zone 2 video for a second TV on the other side of the same wall that the main TV is on, so someone can watch a different source on that screen (ex. netflix on one screen, PS5 on the other). Then, like you, I have the zone two speakers on my patio for outdoor music.
