Worth upgrading? Nah. Its too small a jump. Probably if you were XM2 to XM5. Even then, I feel like the change in the way the headphones are no longer foldable will turn some people off.
Sony got the best ANC (XM3 user here). Bose Q45 is not bad but average compared to Sony XM series for sure (used Q45 for 80 days at Costco with amazing return policy).
If battery life and ANC are not top priorities go with the Bose Q45 (not a bad headset at all). BTW I am a very heavy user of the headset 10-11 hours per day.
But it's not the case. They still have a somewhat boomy signature - that loose low frequency sound that I remember from the Beats series (except the Solo Pro which was a gem aside from its skull crushing ways), except not nearly as egregious. It feels like there's a separation between the lows and the rest of the frequencies the way you'd get with one of those big car sound systems.
Anyway after using it for a while I kind of... got used to it, and it's not bad at all. As much as I want my music to be punchy and deep, I'm not sure if I like this more, or the more subdued but somewhat more accurate Bose sound. As they say, very subjective.
Probably will keep due to the comfort, noise cancellation, and good mics for voice calls.
How do the XM5's compare to the QuietComforts? Is it worth an extra $50 and a lesser warranty (plus giving up those miles)? They are for a teenager who likes mostly rap and a little rock. He may use them for gaming, and will certainly use them for an occasional flight and long road trips.
