Not trying to be smart but you'll know when you need one. If you have to ask then most likely you don't. I, and many others, have asked the same.

These are dedicated riding computers. You can link speed, cadence, heart rate, power, radar sensors and even a Garmin headlight to read/be controlled by this. It has a long battery life for century/multi century rides. Fastens securely to handlebars. Is compact. A phone battery will drain with GPS on longer rides. Also won't connect to all those sensors. A watch can track and connect with some, but will definitely die on longer rides. These are the main advantages of a cycling computer. This is a great deal on it.

Not a pro rider. In the summers I might put in 50 miles of riding on a good week in street riding. I'm using an iGPSPORT BSC100S connected to a hub speed sensor, crank cadence sensor, and a chest HRM. It tracks everything and their app connects to Strava. I don't have a need for live GPS. There are cheaper alternatives to Garmin, Bryton, and Wahoo.

Why would anyone need this? Pretty much anyone I know who cycles has a smart watch or a phone with Strava. Seems redundant.
Huge battery drainer on the phone. It isn't terrible but a dedicated bike computer is preferred by me especially for long rides and lot of use. I am stickler when it comes to battery life for electronic devices.

Can anyone who has owned both compare the 830 to the 800? Big step up (worth the $200) or just minor improvements?

Mid-level enthusiast here. Been riding more around town for the last couple years, then finally made the plunge to get a real road bike a few months ago. After doing a handful of rides in the 15-20mi range across multi-use paths and roads, I didn't like using my watch (Forerunner 255) or phone for directions. For the phone specifically, screen visibility and glare could be an issue on sunny days, notifications from other apps would pop up at inopportune times to block parts of the map, and even shorter rides would eat up battery quickly.

I got an Edge 540, and I love it: visibility is good in all conditions, courses are easy to build using the Connect website, battery life is ridiculous, and multi-band GNSS is very accurate. I also prefer the forward position of the included mount to the phone mounts I've had that are directly over the handlebars. I generally prefer buttons to touch screen for fitness devices (I've had issues with rain and sweaty fingers), but for this specific scenario, I kind of wish I had it at times. Pressing buttons on my watch during a run is a lot easier than doing the same on my 540 while climbing or navigating a tricky intersection. Might swap/upgrade at some point.

I'm not at the level were a bike computer is truly necessary, but it's sure made my rides easier and more fun. Looks like the major feature this 830 lacks from the current gen is multi-band, but $200 is a very good price if you're also running into issues/annoyances using a phone.

Edit: I ended up upgrading to an 840 since the 540 was still in the return window, and it's the best touch-screen experience I've had on a Garmin by a huge margin. So nice to be able to quickly scroll between screens during rides as opposed to pressing a button.

+1 on saving phone battery life when you're out for 4-5 hours on a ride. Also, prefer keeping phone in the back vs on handle bars where I sweat on it or potential to drop or get knocked or in the way.

Also dedicated HRM (not a watch)
Ant+ for cadence/speed (power meter)
Elevation/incline avg/current

Sure you can do it in Strava app.. but see above

I still have a fully working Edge 800, with good battery life. Can anyone who has upgraded from 800 to 830 confirm it's a big enough upgrade (for the $200)? I already have HR strap, cadence and speed sensors, so I'd be able to use all those on the 830.
My upgrade from a 510 to 530 seemed huge. I can only assume coming from an 800, it would be an even bigger upgrade. Really depends on how much you use it. Sounds like not that much if battery life isn't an issue yet.

I bought a lightly used 810 back in 2016 when the 820 was just coming out. Despite some bluetooth issues, it's a been a rock star. Maybe it's time for another similar upgrade. It would also get my overweight butt back on my bike.

Seems like it would be a good purchase for you. You can be more comfortable exploring in cold temps and be able to track your progress.

Why use your phone when you can use paper maps and a compass? Pair that up with a sextant and you have a sweet setup that doesn't require recharging.

530 has no turn by turn navigation, just courses you create or download and load to the device.
830 has mapping and turn by turn navigation
1030 is the 830 with bigger screen
540, 840, 1040 same as above with solar charging.

To be fair, there are other differences between the 830 and 840 than just solar charging (only on some models). New screens, more buttons, updated software...

The battery is rechargeable? User replacing isn't very difficult if you're comfortable with tiny screws but Garmin is very good on fixing these even out of warranty.
