I really want a new iPad but also need more than 64gb memory as I want to use it for movies and shows when traveling without having to steam. I cheaped out on my previous iPad and regretted having just 64gb. However whenever i see the $150 up charge for more memory I just can't press the button. Don't know why im sharing this but just a wee bit frustrated that the memory costs so much more than it really should.
You aren't alone, pretty sure this is many people. Apple doesn't give you anything for cheap, but to anyone with any price sensitivity, the tiering is pretty hard to swallow
Way to own it!

You probably don't, you buy crap you actually OWN and make digital copies that you actually own..or acquire via other mean instead of paying these losers for infinity. That being said, most of those services allow you to cache movies for a time.. not sure if they let you specify the save location. I have zero desire to watch shows on tiny screens so, I'm not expert on this as I don't do it and my kids only do it for temporary viewing on trips. The entire idea of the streaming services is that they want you to own nothing and be happy.
TLDR: i am not sure as i don't have any experience in this as i do not want to do it so it doesn't apply to me but let me throw in my opinion about the current state about modern media and then disparage ipads as a media viewing device and then tell you that you doing it the way you asked about make you sheep.

buy the latest generations/versions of apple stuff not because it's any better than the last, but because it gets you another year before your device is rendered useless by Apple's planned obsolescence.
Translation: buy the newest stuff because apple is going to continue to support providing updates for your ipad 6th gen more than 5 years after it's release date.

To those wondering if the 10th gen is worth it over the 9th.... I would say, if you plan on watching content via the built-in speakers and not AirPods or Bluetooth headphones, then the stereo speakers on both sides are a huge improvement over the speakers coming out of just the one side. That being said, the 9th gen has a headphone jack while the 10th does not, so if you use wired headphones anyway and a 3.5mm jack is important to you, go for the 9th gen (especially if you can get it for around the ~$225 Black Friday sale price, which is a great price for a very capable iPad).
Also the 10th gen does have USB-C, although it's a nerfed USB-C with USB 2.0 speeds :/ but you can still hooked up easily to an external monitor/TV if that is important to you.

I got the 9th for $220 as a ipad for my daughter just to watch video's and some small games. I just could not see spending another $130more then half more for just a little upgrade. If it was going to be heavy used then maybe but i have a 12.9 ipad pro which i use. Check out the difference in likes for this thread and the one for $220 with the trick to lower it on the target deal from black friday.

Can anyone tell me how old is the 9th gen vs 10th gen?
And how to tell how old or what version is the one i have? i got it long time ago, guessing is generation 2 and is a pro model. Got it from target long time ago.
Thanks

I did this, over the 9th gen because of the USB-C ports and Apple Pen support.

Um Apple doesn't do planned obsolescence. I still see people using iPhone 8s and Xs. I just recently moved on from the OG iPad Air. People talk crap about the prices (in some cases like upgrading ram and ssd it's warranted) but considering the use a lot of us get out of these things and the fact of how long they continue to work. It's a win. I remember buying 1200 laptops that would boot up like molasses in 3-4 years 300-400 for a tablet that gets used daily for 5-6 years is a win

They don't? That's amusing that you seem to actually believe that.

Amusing, but I was simply pointing out they don't have yo actually deal with this corporate greed problem at all

I had 2 laptops like that, basically unusable. Cloning the drive to an SSD made them like new. It's easier than you think. Try that if you haven't already dumped them.

Question is - is it worth paying the premium ($100) for the 10th over 9th gen?

Faster processer obviously, as well as USB-C. Not a big Apple or iPad guy, buying as a gift so I'm not sure whether I'm paying for future proofing here or there are other immediate benefits.

This iPad 10th deal is warm with 64gb. hot with 128gb-256gb. iPad Pro and iPad 256gb is cheap per GB.

The best deal long term is a slightly slower last gen chip in exchange for more RAM/SSD especially if there's no SD card.

Best Deals
$350-450 iPad 9th A13 256gb
$200 Dell Tab i5 16gb/512gb with 1tb sd card
$100 iPhone SE 2th A13 128gb
$100 Pixel 6a 128gb
$200 Laptop i5 11th/12th 16gb/512gb with 1tb sd card

Best Crippled Deal
$160-220 iPad 9th A13 64gb
$550 iPad Air M1 64gb
$750 Macbook Air M1 8gb/256gb

Low memory 64gb is a scheme to push iCloud and upcharge 10x for ssd . Don't fall for it, 64gb belongs in 2017 or with sd card

Apple intentionally cripples "entry level" models with low memory. They did this for YEARS with 16 GB iPhones, to the point where you barely had space for apps after iOS. They did this so they could maintain a lower "starting at" price for the newest iPhones even though the memory provided was terrible (esp. as they aged and recieved bigger and bigger iOS updates). This also allows them to sell iCloud storage solutions far more easier to people with lower memory devices.

Meanwhile..

$100-350 Pixel phone came with 128gb with unlimited photo cloud storage.

Yes!
You need to future proof it!

When a product is free, you are the product. That unlimited free cloud storage is google further combing through your data and selling it. There are things called loss leaders. When no one want's to buy your product, you give it away and hope adoption leads to profitability. Google runs a different business with their phone sales than what apple does. It's crazy that people can't see nuances. But also, yes it's dogshit that phones don't come with 1-2tb storage options already.
