Around $1000 for the body should be a fair price point at this time.
I believe you can also use EDU discount if you have one.

Alternatively, there is another post @BugDig which offers the A7III with 28-70mm kit lens for $1368.30 + LG Earbuds work $80ish.
You can also score 5% Cashback if you have Chase Freedom (Checkout via PayPal) + $50 Cashback from Sony.

Will this still hold up in 2024 quality wise? I came from the 6d mark ii and not sure if this was a good move.
I own two A7iii's and considering a third.

I'm starting to realize that most people can't discern too well the quality differences and really it comes down to good framing and lighting. Capturing good moments.

Most people are used to their phones. Anything better is good enough. But high quality, BORING pictures with unflattering lighting won't work with any camera.

I was considering a "cinema camera" next but had a realization that instead of investing in higher quality cameras I want more medium quality ones.

Why? Less worry about breaking them. Change lens by changing camera. Have multiple set up on tripods at the same time. Can't buy multiple $3-5k cameras. Not me. But I can afford 2-3 $1k cameras.

I DOUBT anyone says "not good enough" to the A7iii

Just my $0.02

Is this more of a photography camera or would this be good for videos and shooting in log?

I bought a refurbished Canon R8 on Black Friday for $999 otherwise I'd be buying this Sony now. Sony has a better cheaper lens selection than Canon. Although I hear Canon will be allowing some third party lens in the near future.

If I go with the body only and want to buy another lens for mostly scenery, travel, and basic birdwatching photography, what will be my options (under $500)? Thank you.

PS: I know this is an impossible question to answer and I am no expert to come up with my own answers, so I appreciate any help.

It's about $1000 on the used market, so $1000 new would be pretty insane.

Nope. Do not. Even at $1300 this thing is super outdated for the money compared to what else is out there. Photo you could maybe justify it. No 4k60, no 10 bit, no articulating screen, screen is dim and poor quality and is cluttered, terrible menu system, and still has slightly outdated funky sony color science. This came out back when not everyone had amazing AF, so while the AF for video was great back then, it really doesnt hold up to any modern PDAF or hybrid system. I edit A7iii footage regularly (or at least i did until my client switched to an a7siii a few months ago) and the video AF is frustrating and people trust it way too much. The 1080p60 on these earlier cams is TERRIBLE, and is so artifact-y and soft because historically a lot of these older mirrorless cams didn't focus on 1080p60 and usually had super low bitrates. LOG really isnt even worth bothering with in 8-bit IMO. There's probably another 1-2 dozen video features and assist tools i could list that are available even on like $800 Panasonic cams these days that aren't on this. Can you get great results on this just shooting 4k24? Of course you can. It's a great sensor, and is the same sensor used in many cams like the S5, S1, S1h, Z6, R6. So it does give a great image at 4k24, and would make a great B-cam if you already have a higher end Sony. But it's a pain to use for video, poor ergonomics and menu system, and is really lacking in features. I've shot with it a bunch of times and have edited footage from it probably over 100 times at this point.

It's really frustrating that Sony wont discontinue cameras like they should. So the lineup is totally cluttered and it's utterly confusing for anyone who is new and looking for a camera and comes in and looks at a $2000 a7iii (prior to this sale of course) and logically assumes it's on par with the other Sony/Panny/Canon cams in that price range. It makes it almost impossible for someone new to easily tell which cameras are better than which when they have like 30 options to choose one. At least with Canon/Nikon/Panasonic you can narrow it down by price range and sensor size, but with Sony you have like 4x as many options, many of which are outdated. On top of that, Sony has one of the most confusing and convoluted naming schemes of any brand. I've been b*tching for what feels like years that this being $2000 is crazy as part of their hybrid line.(A7x).

FFS Sony, do the normal thing and have like 2-3 cams at various price brackets for each sensor size for each of the three focuses - photo, video, or hybrid.

You act like these are sold without a warranty. Yes, some have had issues with early shutter failure. Buy an extended warranty if you want insurance. Mine has been a great camera that has held up well to professional use.
Is your "pro use" 150k - 250 k shutter count?

Sony A7 series never had a high shutter count durability. Just look at broken shutter listing.
I wouldn't buy used $100 A73 for high volume use.

A72, A7S2 had horrible shutter life
A73 is at best 50k-105k shutter life lasting 3-6 years for some. Nothing close to D850, Z8, D1, A93 & D5

There's better camera out there

Canon R8 & R6 is only $1000-1300. Insane AF

Nikon Z6 $750-1000.

Sony ZV1

A73 is good photo and good video. But 8-bit video is very limiting for post production.
