I got Pixel6a a year ago in a similar deal from Mint. Even though Mint claimed that phone is locked, I tried inserting a sim from an INTL carrier and it worked. When I called Mint after 12 months then they told me that Google phones are not locked so there is no need to unlock.
I am not sure about 7pro but mine 6a was unlocked from the day I received.
Ported my number to Google Voice many years ago, been using Mint most of those years as a "new customer" by getting a new number each time and setting GV to forward calls to the new number each time (a few quick taps in the GV app does it). This time I'll have to get my own number somewhere else to port in ($3 by setting up a new Google account & porting that out is my most likely path), but everything else is the same.

I look like a new account to Mint each time by using Gmail's "plus sign" feature whereby you insert some random text preceded by a plus sign right before the @ in your email address and that extra stuff looks like a different address to Mint, but Gmail ignores it. For example:

[email protected]

Looks unique to Mint, but still gets processed to the [email protected] address by Google. I often use the company and date for the random text to ensure it's unique, so I'd have:

[email protected]
Last year during the big Mint sale I got this phone and ported our numbers over. I'm a fan of the phone (no fingerprint issues) and Mint's pricing, but beware there are known MMS issues the Pixel 7 Pro on Mint that are not fixed after over a year.

Texting via group texts sometimes doesn't go through (or come through) and sending pictures via text just don't work. After troubleshooting for a year with support and reddit forums, there still isn't a fix. It got better after switching the APN and found one that works OK, but it's never consistent.

Just a warning to anyone considering the switch.

I got the Pixel 6a deal from mint in 2022 and the phone actually came unlocked even though the product listing said it was locked. iirc most SD users reported their phone was unlocked. Maybe we will get lucky again.
This time is locked. Right now on eBay there are 5 or 6 people selling this phone in Locked condiiton from the $400 deal recently and there will be a ton; yes, a TON of selling this Mint locked phone on eBay in the next few months. You will see. I think the price could go down to $250-$300 range for a brand new Mint Locked phone on eBay.

I bought the same phone and plan for at $299 + $120. Called Mint to see if they'd price match but they said no and to return the whole thing instead. Anyone had luck with price matching?

To be fair for the consumer like every other giant retail stores, they should do price match for you. Maybe try to talk to supervisor.

Have had Mint for four years now. Never had a problem. Assuming you have good TMobile reception in your area, Mint should be good

Feel like this thread's wiki should include something about the porting in not being strictly necessary to get the deal. Yes, you'd need it if you wanted the 12 months of service for the price of 6. But can toss the SIM out and the service, and keep the locked phone and use with Mint service if you already have it.

It'd open up the deal to existing Mint users definitely. Whereas I almost passed it up before looking more closely
Strange nothing asked for porting information at checkout

You will port your number when you activate the plan.
Not complicated, no need for your number yet right?

Yes, I have done this. You canalso activate the plan on another phone if wanted, you MUST port a number to get the 12months. Otherwise it will be 6.

That's the thing

If you look carefully at the page, here's where the porting in bit shows up: "GET 50% OFF ANY 12-MONTH PLAN
When you buy a new phone from Mint
Must bring your phone number to Mint"

The phone is 99 bucks, and you're buying the plan to bundle with it that happens to have that deal attached to it (50 percent off on 12 month plan). They're forcing you to get a plan is all.

This is exactly why people have been able to resell/use phone and plan separately. It's nothing like the Metro deals, if you're familiar with those. They tie the SIM to the IMEI and whatnot.

This should be good for trade in for Pixel 8 right? Pixel 8 is for $550 at Google store, and many people received email with a minimum $100 discount coupon code. So it's around $485 after tax. Trade in value for Pixel 7 pro is $315. So in the end, it would be $170 + $220 = $390 for an unlocked Pixel 8. Good?
