I got Pixel6a a year ago in a similar deal from Mint. Even though Mint claimed that phone is locked, I tried inserting a sim from an INTL carrier and it worked. When I called Mint after 12 months then they told me that Google phones are not locked so there is no need to unlock.
I am not sure about 7pro but mine 6a was unlocked from the day I received.
Ported my number to Google Voice many years ago, been using Mint most of those years as a "new customer" by getting a new number each time and setting GV to forward calls to the new number each time (a few quick taps in the GV app does it). This time I'll have to get my own number somewhere else to port in ($3 by setting up a new Google account & porting that out is my most likely path), but everything else is the same.

I look like a new account to Mint each time by using Gmail's "plus sign" feature whereby you insert some random text preceded by a plus sign right before the @ in your email address and that extra stuff looks like a different address to Mint, but Gmail ignores it. For example:

[email protected]

Looks unique to Mint, but still gets processed to the [email protected] address by Google. I often use the company and date for the random text to ensure it's unique, so I'd have:

[email protected]
Last year during the big Mint sale I got this phone and ported our numbers over. I'm a fan of the phone (no fingerprint issues) and Mint's pricing, but beware there are known MMS issues the Pixel 7 Pro on Mint that are not fixed after over a year.

Texting via group texts sometimes doesn't go through (or come through) and sending pictures via text just don't work. After troubleshooting for a year with support and reddit forums, there still isn't a fix. It got better after switching the APN and found one that works OK, but it's never consistent.

Just a warning to anyone considering the switch.

Thanks! I think it was live again for about 10 minutes after your post. I was able to grab the phone itself for 99$! I shall see if it ships. My SIL ordered two of these the other day when it was live, and she ordered one for $189 and one for $99 and both arrived! I am not sure why it showed $99 for one, but now it shows the $189 when I click ( and I cannot check out) but we will see if it ships!
That's crazy, she was able to order and receive just the phone and only for $99. That's a great Xmas deal.

For the offline unlock steps, someone mentioned before it is really risky. The explanation provided is "One mistake and it locks up again, with factory reset being the only way to try next round.". Not sure what exactly is mistake but I guess could be certain update(?) Accidentally turned off VPN(?) And another major draw back mentioned is "most Work apps won't install with an active VPN app like Netguard".

Then the question you need to ask yourself is if somehow your phone is locked, you may not notice it until you tried to make phone call (or use your phone outside your home) w/o wifi which at that time you may have missed many important calls. And if you are outside during emergency and at that time you notice your phone is locked and can't make phone call, you may be in trouble.... Best do it for secondary phone and probably don't want to give the phone to other people especially those non tech-savvy person that can't do the unlock steps themselves.
Totally agree! Not worth it if used as the primary phone.

Finally got my phone from FedEx a few mins back.
Can you please help out on the next steps?
I already have a t-mobile postpaid plan, so I'm not thinking of using mint plan
However, how should I proceed to get 12 months one, which needs port in, or keep a 6-month plan n use a new number
Also, I want to start unlocking time to start as soon as possible so that I can use it after 1 yr of unlocking
If I use offline unlocking steps, will this or are there drawbacks like constant notifications, or can you update the latest monthly patches?
I am also interested in selling plan
I would really appreciate any inputs I get..
I have read almost all comments
Thanks in advance ๐Ÿ™
You have read almost all the comments but can't find the info that can answer your question? I'm sure it is all there. There is also an older thread for the same Pixel 7 Pro which you can get more info from.
You want the unlock clock to start but you also want to sell the plan etc etc. How can that happen if you don't "register" the phone to Mint's system?

Anyone who can't figure out the steps to activate the 12 month plan should not venture into that unlocking world with that VPN etc etc etc..... Just my 2ยข

Sorry, I can't find a straight answer to this question.
If I insert in an existing working Mint SIM to the phone, will it automatically trigger the 12 months unlocking period (I would take the SIM out of the phone after and not using the phone for 12 months until it gets unlocked). Or is there any other way to activate the unlocking period without using the Mint SIM that comes with the phone?
Thank you.

Have you tried inserting a non-Mint SIM into the phone?

There are two system apps "Device Setup" (1 copy) and "Carrier Setup" (2 copies) that talk to Mint's server and lock the phone to Mint. The steps to offline unlock is to factory reset and then block these apps from accessing the internet. The blocking is achieved using a local VPN based firewall like NetGuard or NetPatch. The risk is that if the firewall stops and these apps can access internet they will lock the phone with the only option to unlock being factory reset. Other risks are an Android Update can add a new app which will do the locking. Before the Dec 2022 security patch these apps could be disabled using adb shell, but Google patched it by making Device Setup a system app (which cannot be disabled).

If you have another SIM that you want to use then I recommend still using your Mint SIM in dual SIM mode, do that you are never locked out of the phone (Mint SIM won't lock). Otherwise use this as secondary phone. I have a RedPocket SIM with ATT as my primary SIM and Mint as secondary because T-Mobile has terrible network at my work. In case the phone locks up for any reason, I will still be connected through Mint.

When the phone locks up (I had some trial and error before unlocking), it opens this page when you insert a non-Mint SIM: https://www.mintmobile.com/mint-m...ck-policy/

I have the same question as well. Do i need to activate/keep using the pixel 7 pro in order to be eligible for unlocking after 1 year?

I just had a chat with CC.
The CC guy confirmed that unlocking period starts when I start using the phone with existing Mint SIM. Anyway, I'll be porting in my new number in a month. If what CC guy said is incorrect, I'll just have to wait 1 more extra month. Hopefully, what he said true.

Here's a fresh question: I am an exising Mint customer, and plan to use this phone with my existing plan and selling the 12-month plan (I'm already on the same plan). Will the phone still unlock in 12 months off my existing Mint plan?

EDIT: Answered by the user above me, thanks!

Hey, I'm sorry I don't know the answer to your question. I just also got the phone, but I didn't see a sim card. Can you describe where the sim card is? I wonder if I threw it away.
