1. If this device requires Wi-Fi, it presumably consumes power. How does the power flow then without neutral, into the ground wire or something? Into ground would be not up to code. This makes no sense to me, how the heck does it work, on batteries or something?
2. Have there been any way discovered to operate these without hub or cloud? I don't want devices that snitch on me. If there's an API I could tap into, that would be a sale

1. They don't necessarily require WiFi because they use a zigbee radio but most apps that control them use some form of WiFi. My understanding is that non-neutral switches work by keeping the current on the line just below the power required to turn on the light in the circuit but strong enough to keep the radio active. Once the radio receives the signal to flip the switch it increases the power and the light turns on.
2. You will need a hub for this because it lacks WiFi but your hub can be managed however you like. You can keep your hub off the cloud pretty easily with home assistant but it's not super user friendly it definitely has a learning curve.
I hope this was clear I know it's a bit complicated to setup.
This is a good price - I paid $33 a piece for my switches.
I use them with an Aqara M2 hub, with the closet automations set up directly in the Aqara app, and they are also exposed to Home Assistant through HomeKit, like the previous poster.
my parents house is wired the same way so i ripped out all the wiring and rewired the whole house lol
