It looks like the US "Reservation Gift" cannot be used towards the phone either: "The Gift cannot be applied to the pre-ordered device(s) and must be used at the time of pre-order purchase towards purchasing additional eligible products on Samsung.com, or in the Shop Samsung App."

Exactly. Having a choice is better. Still have not had anyone explain what the customer GAINED by removing the expansion slot. Prices have done nothing but go up since it's removal.

getting rid of the SD card was a money grab on the high end phones....storage is cheap.....they figure if you can afford their high end phone you will pay up for more storage.....they include and brag about the A54 having SD card storage

I don't know for sure, but my guess is because they don't want to redesign some of these crappy midrange phones. They probably figure it's cheaper to include the microsd reader into the phone than to redesign the board inside the phone. Also gives an extra spec boost for these low/midrange phones.

Another possibility is they're designed with 2nd/3rd world countries in mind where they need more local storage since their cell infrastructure is garbage.

You know that the manufacturers collect tons of usage data over decades to make the decisions to remove things that no one uses. Sadly they don't care how "YOU" use your phone, but rather how 90% of their customers use their phones.

I too would prefer to have the SD slot, but I am not naive enough to think they don't know exactly how to do customer use research.
Not always true and I'd like to respectfully disagree. I'll try to make my argument below.

Headphone jack: Apple removed the headphone jack during the time I'm sure more than 10% of users did use them. They could've easily launched Airpods alongside the headphone jack, but they timed it that way because it benefits them and created a Billion dollar industry out of thin air. (We all know how Samsung ridiculed it, but then noticed the money it made and followed course)
Apple claims: Innovation, Ease-of-use, Slimmer phones, water-resistance
Myth bust: Providing users the choice doesn't take away from ease or innovation. Galaxy S8, S9 were slimmer, had larger batteries and provided water resistance.
Reality: More money for the company
Do users miss this in 2022? ~50% do. https://www.androidpolice.com/wee...martphone/

Expandable storage / microSD: Support for microSD card is something most would appreciate and use. 128G is not enough for many, esp. if they shoot videos. (Ask any pet parent). I had never bought the higher storage tier phones when they had expandable storage - because the base storage was enough for my apps and OS, and I had the freedom of expanding storage when I needed. And external storage also approached very good speeds around the time they were deprecated on phones. By removing this, they have forced millions of casual users to consider upgrading storage tiers for that one occassion where they might otherwise run out of space - and that is an easy $100 or more upchage. And in most cases these storage tiers don't move the needle enough in terms of increased trade-in / resale values.
Company claims: Not fast enough, not needed, not used by most people.
Myth bust: High-Speed microSD were sufficiently fast for recording 4K video to card. If not needed or not used, why do we see so many people choose higher storage tiers?
Do people miss this in 2023? Apparently ~84% still do. https://www.androidauthority.com/...s-3366161/

User-replaceable batteries are also another topic of contention - proving to be one of Top 3 reasons contributing to planned obsolescence in Smartphones, though IMO not brazen as the above 2 anti-consumer moves.
https://fastercapital.com/content...Cycle.html

Companies collect huge data on user habits and preferences, but they don't always use them to give more of what users want - they also use this data to hold arbitrage of features they care, and market a different form of them that users will be forced to pay for - eventually driving profits. I've ranted enough - all I'm saying is let us not drink the kool aid fed by these companies' PR.

it doesn't hurt the phone to have SD card expansion.....what's your logic on why they took it out of the S23 and kept it in the A54??.....It would not have affected the S23 at all to have just kept it in and let the user decide whether they want to use it or not.....they took it out of the flagships for a reason

The only reason for me to upgrade is my 7y son has played with my phone a lot recently and dropped it twice and the screen is scratched pretty badly. I am lucky the screen has not cracked yet. Cannot wait to upgrade it to S24 ultra
Uh...buy soon a used phone? Heavy duty case?

Feels like you're ignoring many rational solutions, including no phone for kids.

I feel $200 max out of pocket is a good upgrade with trade in of an S22 Ultra
It was just 249 to get S23U/S9U
so that's too much for me. S24U is the same copy & paste design. They even have the same 5k battery from the S22U!

I think you could've stopped right here. You are in the very very tiny minority that would store this much data on your phone instead of just streaming it.

EDIT: Just to add, unless you're going somewhere super remote that doesn't have cell coverage or wifi then you could run a plex server (or something similar) and stream all that media from your server at home.
And you lost me at "streaming it."

The whole purpose of expandable storage is to NOT having to use/rely on an internet connection. Are you kidding me?

And I own all my music - which are all high quality lossless FLAC files. You're not going to get that with most streaming sites. And the ones that do with limited song tracks, why don't you try streaming that music on a cross-country road trip through the desert and tell me if ALL your music plays seamlessly. LOL

The whole point is to avoid using your mobile connection.

And that's not to mention when you use your mobile data = uses more battery = more charge cycles on your (sealed) battery = more wear to that battery that degrades just a little bit after each charge.

Come on now...

I don't know about you, but on my Note 20 Ultra, I have a 1TB SD card and 95% of it is full. I have my entire music collection (with a lot of FLAC files ~ 300GB), lots of HD & 4K films/videos/entire tv shows, + all my photos and personal files.

I use the onboard 128gb storage for apps only + some other miscellaneous files, and currently 65% is that is used. Any more and it will bog down the phone.

And this is not uncommon at all if you go to places like Reddit and other online phone forums. It's very commonplace. Sure we're outliers, but there's something about having EVERYTHING in the palm of your hands ready to be accessed whenever AND onboard locally, as opposed to relying on the cloud, potentially being hacked, bad internet, being tracked, using clunky flash drives, etc..

And that's me compromising to save space. I'm waiting for 2TB cards to be released and become affordable. 1.5TB isn't enough. I could fill 2TB up easily.
I am just going to say good luck to you because I've been down that road before and SD card did give up on me and it was not fun. You can certainly enjoy the convenience but I recommend you to make sure your photos and personal files are backed up.

Edit: I hope the folks are not thinking that I'm against having SD card slot. No, I would very much want the SD card. It's just that I would only use it for media instead of photos and videos I capture.

wow that's a crazy amount of edge cases. How often do you do cross country road trips?

1) most people don't care about lossless audio.
2) most people don't leave areas with mobile data

Two very reasonable alternatives have been mentioned in this thread to address these concerns:

1) if you have mobile data or wifi you can run a plex server to stream your lossless audio.
2) if you don't have mobile data, plug in a usb-c microsd card reader for the very few instances that you actually need it.

As for concerns about battery degradation... seriously? Facepalm
1) 100% WRONG. Then why are the major streaming sites now offering higher quality/near lossless music and touting it? If people don't care, why even bother? LOL

100% wrong.

2, 1) I have many friends from college living in various major metropolitan areas across the country that have terrible mobile connections, especially during peak business times. Not every city is the same. Cell coverage is not 100% everywhere, even in a major city. Are you not aware of this?

2) A USB card reader? You're telling me if someone had the option to have everything onboard versus having to store/always have on them and attaching a clunky card reader to the bottom of your phone (and potentially damaging your charge port), you think they would choose option B? Come on now.

And battery degradation is a real concern for people, especially power users. Seriously?

Your arguments are weak and now you're just throwing anything out there hoping something will stick.

It's okay to be wrong. 🤡

Tmobile carrier. Have S9 plus, s8, note 3 and note 5 to trade in. Any tips on where to purchase the s24 ultra for the best deal? Through Tmobile or Samsung preorder? Extra storage would be nice but don't want to pay more for "free" watch/earbuds.
