A refurb direct from Nikon might be pretty safe, though the warranty is only 90 days instead of 1 year. It's known among photographers that you're lucky if you have an early warranty issue with, for example, a lens, because when you send it in, it gets the kid glove treatment with cleaning and recalibration that's probably better than at the initial factory inspection. If they treat refurbs the same, then that wouldn't be bad. I would just use it heavily for the first couple of months to make sure nothing's wrong.
I sold my 200-500mm f/5.6 ED VR on eBay for $960. Getting one direct from Nikon for $1007.95 is pretty good. The lowest new price (annual sale) is $1,069, if I recall correctly.

I feel the same as you do, wish it was a one year warranty like Canon does.
But I have been shooting Nikon since the 1990's and had countless lenses. The only time I have had one go out is....well, when I dropped one. And, I have dropped 5 lenses in my days. And when I sent them in for repair, they came back as a Nikon certified refurbished lens.
The big lens I dropped was my Nikon AF-s 500mm, F/4 "G" lens. I sent it in for repair and they replaced all motors, clean all of the glass AND recalibrated the lens for sharpness. When I got it back, I never knew what I was missing before Nikon recalibration the lens. That lens was sooooo sharp, it blow me away. The lens worked perfectly for another 4 years until I went with the mirrorless camera and lenses.
If anyone wants that out of stock 24-70 f4 s lens for the z-mount you can easily find people like me willing to sell it for less than what Nikon is selling refurbished for because they bundled it with every other camera they made for Z mount.
I updated this deal to include all of the mirrorless camera except for the Z-50 Deals & this Z50 post. When I first posted this, the cameras did not include the 10% off, not some of them do.
