Saw these at my store for $49.97. Two cents less than the deal from September. You can use costco same day to see if your store has it, and see if it will be the clearance price. For instance, at my store the inflated same day delivery price is $58.46. YMMV. Still showing at $79.99 on Costco.com
Just remember with 120v heaters; 1500w on a tiny heater is the same as 1500w with a huge heater. There may be different styles of emitting/circulating the heat, but you physically can't get more then about 5000BTU from 1500w. This is why most baseboard/in-wall electric resistance heaters use 240v circuits.
Regular circuits have 15 amp breakers. A 1500 watt heater pulls 12-13 amps on its own. If they increase the wattage, it'll just trip the breaker.
Correct me if I'm wrong but a radiator is hot to the touch where as this Vornado is not... Something to consider if you have little ones around.
I bought 2 of these a few months ago on sale ($50 each) and I'm very pleased with their performance this winter.

Can't say if it's a SD or not but this heater has a few extras. It has it's own digital thermostat which is very nice to have. Allows you to set and forget it. Vornado heaters also have an interesting feature in that when they are turned off, they automatically crank up the fan for 8 seconds after the heater is shut off. The heating coils are still hot so they get that _little_ extra heat into the room. A very small but well thought out feature.
The feature where the fan runs for 8 seconds after turning it off is actually a safety feature - meant to cool down the coils from their super high temp before you pack it away in a cardboard box. Either way - well thought out as you said. I'm super paranoid, so I let it cool down. for 3-4 hours before packing it away.
I had to return this after it burnt my 20amp outlet .
It should be ok even with a 15A outlet. Could it be that the wiring in your outlet is loose? I hated that the original electrician wiring my house used the wire push-in slot instead of securing it around the screw terminal - had to shut down the juice at the breaker box and spent hours redoing all of them.
How well does this work in fan only mode for cooling /circulating air during the summer?
Good question and it works very well in fan-only mode. I didn't use the fan-only mode at first but at times my 14 x 14 foot room felt too warm and stuffy so turned on the fan-only mode and it does a very good job of quickly cooling/circulating the air. In heater mode the fan doesn't run very fast and is very quite but in fan-only mode the fan runs much faster and is more audible.
79.99 for me at the Norfolk, VA store but I bought this a month ago at 69.99 and I'd buy it at 80, it's a fantastic heater, heats a very large space, and so quiet you won't even know it's on
Went today and I didn't see a price for it and hoped it would be $50. When I checked out, it scanned at $40!! There was only one left. I should have bought both.
