Our 20 year old Whirlpool from 2004 is still doing well. No issues with ice maker or anything else, knock on wood. And this is model is what builders included at the time, so I have been surprised to see it last nice and long.
Our kitchenaid 42" wide from 2007 recently had the main board replaced for $600, was better than paying another $12k for a new one if you can even find them anymore, hard to find really large ones now.
This is the type the appliance repairs guys say to get. Either no water and ice or water is inside not on the door.
Yep I've never had a fridge with water/ice outside that didn't fail. This is even for reliable brands like GE or Whirlpool, in addition to the less reliable ones like Kenmore and LG
Have this fridge - really like it. The shelves have enough depth to hold plenty of items. It even fits smaller sized pizza boxes. I would buy again but my wife demands an ice make on door
Then tell her to a) pay for it and, b) fix the refrigerator when it breaks (every time).
I've been doing some research and door ice makers are purportedly the leading cause of failure; they effectively reduce the quality to crap level.
If you're smart, you'll do some research for yourself before you let her make any decisions.
😂😆🤣 do your research folks. Google "Samsung refrigerator"
I moved into a house with a Samsung french door fridge and HATE it. The water dispenser randomly decides to stop working for a few hours at a time (not the filter or ice in the line, it just has opinions on when to work). The in door ice maker takes up a simply tremendous amount of space inside the fridge, essentially eliminating the shelves of one door. It also produces the cloudiest ugly ice I have ever seen. The bottom freezer is horrible to use, there's only 1 shelf so you can't ever stay organized. You'll spend 5 minutes going "I thought there was a couple more bagel dogs." every time you want one. The plastic rails on the "gallon" shelves on the door cracked from having two gallons of milk at once. To top it off it also pours water into the deli drawer whenever it runs a defrost cycle. I do like the party ice tray in the freezer, but it produces apx 1 cube of ice an hour which is just pathetic.
Last house came with an LG fridge with the "linear compressor" which shit the bed two months out of warranty. Between those two and my crappy samsung dishwasher I have completely sworn off both brands for all appliances.
I've only had side by side fridges with water/ice on the door and haven't had a problem with leaking or cooling (knock on wood). I think the first one was bought back in '97 at my parents place (whirlpool gold) which is still running for the record) as is my current whirlpool side by side (bought in 2019). Have had an LG side by side with an inverter drive whatnot which had no issues and worked for at least 6 or 7 years before I sold the place. Maybe these issues are limited to French door style?

We actually just grabbed a little stand alone ice maker that sits on the counter to solve that same issue. (her ice requests) We can just use it when she wants it, and it makes little bullet ice cubes. It's at $78 now on Walmart, but I bought it a month ago for $54. Here's the link to the one we picked up:
Just fyi, the Maytag 10 year warranty only covers the compressor. It specifically doesn't cover the rust stains on the stainless exterior, nor the broken plastic drawer fronts that were poorly designed (this fridge has a different drawer design from mine, thankfully).
As a current full kitchen Maytag owner, I would not buy Maytag again.
There has never been ONE refrigerator on this site that has more thumbs up than thumbs down.,,
Excellent comment and so true. Been looking for a new fridge and every deal that's posted here seems like nothing but problems. Miss the good-ole days when Sears was still in business.

My last frig was a small Haier cabinet depth bottom freezer that replaced a side by side that I didn't like. Moved 3 years ago and the house came with a Samsung french door frig with an ice maker in the bottom. It's now around 13 years old.
Mine's been fine and I know the previous owner and they had no issues with it.
Just had a tech out to diagnosis a control board failure on a two month old induction range. He noted my Samsung and said they were awful. Meanwhile he's working on my Frigidaire stove. Luck of the draw?
So I'd buy another Samsung or a Maytag or Haier, but will avoid any brand's side by side models. Much prefer bottom freezers.

For me, for less than $80 it was a lot better than a new fridge! (especially since the ice maker is the main part that fails) Happy wife, happy life!
Edit: What's this about?
