Most states you can file your taxes free online. Intuit uses your money to lie to the government then lobby to keep the process complex and prevent the IRS from giving everyone a free tool when they got caught.
Wrong. Most states do not let you file for free online. There are only a few states that allow you a free online filing of your taxes.
You do not need premium. Take it from me. I know what I'm talking about. I use Deluxe every year. You do not need premium.

I haven't had to deal with this in several years, but Schedule E is supported and I believe the guidance is the same. Looks like they took it out one year, so could be a moving target: https://ttlc.intuit.com/community...e/00/37392
I doubt they'd remove it again since there must have been some backlash. As noted there, the deluxe desktop version is the one that supports schedule E, not the online version.
I talked to two different intuit CS reps who told me that the rental-related forms (e.g., Sched. E) are NOT included in the Deluxe version. One rep indicated they were in Premier. The other said that the forms began with Home and Business. Well, Premier and H&B are not too far apart in price. I guess I will need to bite the bullet and get H&B because I am self-employed and am a landlord. Unless, someone else has a better suggestion. Is there an H&R Block version of H&B? If so, will my carryovers be recognized? (NOTE: the first rep told me that the prices for all the TurboTax products will be INCREASING on April 1st.)

Deluxe desktop 100% supports these things. They may have been referring to the online version or their own marketing has confused their CS reps. H&R Block desktop deluxe is the same in terms of supporting Schedule E.

PS - the fact that they told you the price is increasing April 1st is a huge clue that they're either trying to scare you or they're talking about the online version. That said, there aren't many sales on TT desktop this late in the season.

Side note - FreeTaxUSA, OLT, and Cash App Taxes all support Schedule E for free (FreeTaxUSA and OLT charge $10-15 for state filing but that's free too with Cash App).

Well, I told them I always buy the desktop version. I am sure I specically asked about the desktop version of Deluxe -- but they may have reverted to reviewing the online Deluxe features. How can I be sure before buying and installing? Thanks for the other free tax filing tips. I am just very afraid my carryover losses may not be recognized by new non-TT software. Do the free ones also have Form 8829 for home busnesses?

All three of the free products I listed support rental income (schedule E), investment income (schedule D) and, home business expenses (form 8829). I've heard that FreeTaxUSA has the best import from other software, but you should go through and double check your carryovers. I have seen TurboTax miss carryovers from itself, so I always double check! If you're still hesitant, FreeTaxUSA also has Pro Support [freetaxusa.com] for $50 and I'm sure they could help you verify the carryovers. Then you'd be set going forward to stick to the free version.

FreeTaxUSA list of supported forms: https://www.freetaxusa.com/forms-federal
OLT.com list of supported forms: https://www.olt.com/main/home/cur...dforms.php
Cash App Taxes supported forms: https://taxeshelp.cash.app/s/arti...es-support

With regard to TurboTax, I am generally skeptical of customer service agents, especially from a company like Intuit. They're often not well trained on the products they support and/or they're just following a script or marketing materials. Intuit intentionally uses deceptive marketing to upsell you - like steering you to premiere with checkboxes for investment and rental income, but then the wording actually says "additional help" for these items. If you dig, there is a list of supported forms [intuit.com] for the desktop version and what you'll notice is that it's not broken down by product version. And just to clarify - the guidance is still there and you're not manually filling out forms with all of these products.

In the end, you can believe the people here (or Bogleheads or Reddit, etc.), or you can go with the marketing materials and reps from Intuit. Your choice. FWIW - deluxe has a built-in option to upgrade to premiere (they would never miss an upsell opportunity!). It's not that much money in the grand scheme of things either way.

Thank you so much for you prompt replies. I believe i will take a chance this year with FreeTaxUSA or the desktop version of Deluxe. Since you indicate you are very knowlegeable regarding tax software, I am curious as to what software you use for your return. Only TT Deluxe Premier desktop? If so, why not FreeTaxUSA (and have you ever used it for your return)?

I'm no expert, but I've used various tax software over the years, sometimes more than one in a year when I've helped friends out. I used to get scammed by the Intuit marketing to upgrade to Premiere, but realized there was no advantage over Deluxe thanks to posts here and at Bogleheads forum. I have a family member that still buys Premiere every year because they're stubborn lol. I tried H&R Block one year because it was cheap - it gets the job done but it's not as nice as TurboTax for the most part. Should have listened to my dad who had the same experience many years earlier.

Like many people, these were the only two options I really knew about, but I always wondered why filing taxes was so complicated - so much time spent re-entering data the government already has. I suppose that made sense in the days of paper returns, but it felt super outdated. And the software doesn't really improve year to year - just tax law changes. Then I read this article [propublica.org] and it all became clear. Lobbying, deceptive marketing, hidden fees, etc. I just couldn't support these guys any more. That led to me to explore other options and I was pleasantly surprised by the number of free and inexpensive options and I've found FreeTaxUSA to be just about as good as TurboTax and H&R Block. OLT.com and Cash App Taxes are good too. The only thing I miss is the 1099 import from banks/brokerages. Haven't convinced my family member to switch from TurboTax desktop, so I still have access to it.

Read my wiki post from this thread. I go over the pros/cons of download vs online software and the available free/cheap options.

tl;dr - just use FreeTaxUSA if you're willing to use online software. If not, TurboTax Deluxe desktop or H&R Block Deluxe desktop will do pretty much everything. Block is cheaper but TT doesn't feel as dated.

Let us know how it works out for you!

Thanks again and I will let you know how it works out. But you still didn't indicate what you currently use - a free program or desktop TT Deluxe? Why? Also, does the FTUSA state fee include state efile or just the state-related tax software?

I'm using FTUSA for myself TT desktop to help my parents. My parents don't like change and I don't trust them to have secure online passwords either lol.

FTUSA state fee does include state e-file. They are very up front with their pricing and no last minute surprises.

Thanks. I was wondering if I HAD to pay $15 for the state software. The price is more than fair. I just I live a mile from my state tax office and I would usually print out the state return on TT and then just drop it off.

intuit changed the way how to activate the software, and made it is very hard to share.

if you really need H&B, your best bet is to trade a premier license, activate, and pay intuit to upgrade to H&B.

I missed this deal, but looking to do myself this year on TurboTax Delux by buying it from costco for $55, i was reading some review on costco and some say, it cost to e-file, it costs more to download additional state and e-file that is another $20.

I live in NJ and work in NYC, so i have to file two states, with NJ and non-resident NY
I wonder if this software would work for me. I was paying my accountant $375 every year.

Anyone have any info, please let me know.
Someone who have the software can let me know how much it costs to download NJ state

Thanks.

Yes $40 for an additional state software download (one is included) and $20-25 per state to e-file. NY law prohibits e-file fees, but you still have to pay for the state software. You can always print and mail or file on your state's dept of revenue website to save the e-file fee.

Alternatively, FreeTaxUSA is free federal and $15/state. OLT.com is free federal plus $10/state. Cash App Taxes doesn't support multi-state filing.
