When these showed up a couple of weeks back sold through Amazon I purchased 4. These drives are Enterprise monsters and are very well built but also quite old. A different subvariant of the same model (also about 5 years old) shows up on the latest Backblaze data with a 5% annual failure rate. Probably no good for mission-critical applications but a reasonable option for backups. I tested all 4 with a full surface scan using HGST DFT. All 4 passed but one of the 4 immediately started showing "click of death" symptoms. The seller, goHardDrive replaced the misbehaving drive with no fuss.
For those that don't want to go through Newegg, the same drive under goHardDrive's MDD brand is available on Amazon for the same price.

Always have backups of your backups. Have a drive you keep unplugged and update it every so often.

The three I ordered arrived yesterday, and just got around to slapping them into UnRaid a little while ago. Like ncage1974, mine are all WD branded. Not sure how I feel about that, but they all sound fine, smell ok, and passed the initial short S.M.A.R.T. tests.

Mine are between 25 and 40 months old - the oldest of them had a combined read / write just a little north of 6 petabytes EEK!

Anyone have any thoughts on the potential ramifications of receiving WD labeled drives rather than HGST?
If you look at the S/N it's the same with what's advertised.

Just got this Hard Drive in the mail. Came with a WD sticker on it. Replaced my failed WD Red drive in my NAS and this drive shows 28,000 Hours. The 7 year old WD Red drive had 52,000 Hours. I first saw a "bad sectors" warning 1.5 years ago and finally got a "Failed" error last week. I hope this refurbished drive lasts a while.

There's likely no difference beyond the logo. As I recall, the drives were originally a HGST helium design that WD also sold under their own brand. Also, WD now owns HGST.

My two came in. I have one that has 5 off-line uncorrectable errors. Trying to decide if to replace now or wait for stock to replenish.

Possibly getting a drive with 6 petabytes of read/write makes me wanna wait a bit.

I just received my drive and as soon as I plugged it in, I get a click sound that happens every 5s. I'm assuming this isn't normal for a drive like this? Should I put in for a replacement immediately or wait? What tools should I use to test/check the drive?

It's likely normal. You'll see a lot of people complaining about it. You can test the drive with something like HDDScan or Victoria.

These are back at $89.

I was also able to purchase from directly from goHardDrive for $89 and avoid sales tax.

(I just emailed customer service asking them to do an order direct for the same price. They sent me a paypal invoice to pay.)

How did you reach out to them to purchase without going thru Newegg?

Bought 5 of these during the deal. All surface scans came back completely bad block free. Been loading them up for a week now, zero issues detected with Hard Drive Sentinel monitoring them. Solid buys if you need lots of storage but, as always, be sure to have some sort of redundancy.

Just want to record this for the record. I receiving 2 drives today. I currently have put 1 drive into my nas. FYI the drive has WD branding on it not HGST. Since WD ownes HGST i don't know that it matters. The 1st drive came with 29636 hours on it or 3.3 years. Since the drive its replacing is over 13 years old i'm quite happy. I did a quick SMART test on the drive and smart attributes all look good. I'm rebuilding/resilvering my RAID 5 array right now (which freaked me out a little of course) but after its done i will let everyone know how Drive #2 turns out & I will do an extended SMART test which i believe takes some time.
Sorry this took me forever but it took like forever & a day to rebuild / resilver my array. It took over a week. When that was done it wanted to do a datascrub which take 1.5 days & then it wanted to do an extended SMART test which i finally gave up on 2 of my drives. I just ploped the 2nd drive in & the powered on hours was 19286 hours (2.2 years). Again no smart errors. I have been extremly happy with this seller & i will definitely use them again.

Should be normal. It will calm down after a while. I believe it is part of the Preventive Wear Leveling (PWL)
