Quote from tonkotsu :
needing $1,000 (2 deposits of $500) and holding period of 4.5 months to get $250...... or $55 per month

is this effectively the same as a 5.5% interest bearing account?
$1000 would earn $55 @ 5.5% over a year, it would actually be a little more due to compounding interest if you didnt touch the monthly credits. Interest rates are annual not monthly. $55/mth in interest on $1000 would be about 66% annual rate.
