There are considerable downsides. Capacity is less than a good NiMh. Almost ALWAYS the capacity does not live up to the marketing and sometimes is HALF of claimed capacity.
The voltage conversion creates heat. No big deal for low current draw but it DOES LIMIT HIGH CURRENT DRAW. They usually start to falter in the 1.5>2.0A range (a good NiMh does WAY better). Do you need voltage, or current?
So.....some camera strobe/flashes REQUIRE a high current to recharge, which might not work well. Depends on THE PARTICULAR CAMERA, and THE PARTICULAR BATTERY.
This makes it a chore to sort out and, 95%+ of the reviews on Amazon are useless and ignorant of REAL data.
They tend to be quite expensive. The cheap ones, generally are the poor ones. 2 of the better brands I know are Tenavolt and Xtar, both expensive.
Recently bought and tested some Chicnod 1.5v AA > half capacity (but cheap).
Have some Imren coming, also a good deal, but untested yet.
Some JWWYJ,Lithium Ion 1.5v [amazon.com] $20 for 4 almost made their capacity claim (1625mAh @ 0.6A), sagged to 1485/1.5A, 1400/1.0A, and started failing 1220/2.0A (the best one). Of 4 tested one failed the 2.0A test completely!
No idea about longevity of any but the Tenavolt, which have been doing fine for 2 years now.
Fyi. My local garbage company picks up my old batteries if i put them in a ziploc bag and place them on top of my recycle bin. Check if yours provide this service

I get about 6 months on blink cameras with these, way too expensive now so I trashed the blink cameras
Amazon does not have AAA for the sale price, while Lowes does and not limit.
Purchased a tad over $125 worth of these.
Less than $1 month/camera is too expensive to keep your home safe?

Well I dunno, maybe burglars or vandals since most use them for home security? What do you think they're for? Watching birds that are nesting nearby?
Best other deal I've seen for them all the time is BJ Warehouse that is like $34 for 18, but they often run $3-4 coupons.
I use eneloops for everything around the house that we use frequently, for other rare stuff that infrequent use I use lithiums. The reason being they last so long, are temp resistant, and most importantly they don't LEAK. The last few years, it doens't matter if you buy energizer, duracell, rayovak if they are alkaline they leak. I've had all 3 leak still in the package.
