Apples and oranges considering each CPU is compatible with a different motherboard. I wouldn't even consider this unless you already have an AM4 motherboard. If you're building from scratch, just get the 7800X3D.

Im trying to build a gaming PC. I was recommended AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8-Core, 16-Thread Desktop Processor. Or would this CPU be a better option? Paired with a AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX Graphics Card. Thanks

That's if you're building a gaming centric PC, but I'm pretty sure the 5900x outperforms the 7800x3d in workload scenarios, so it's kind of a wash if you need a workload cpu.

Yeah, you could upgrade AM5 later when prices go down, but an AM4 build is probably cheaper right now.

This wouldn't be best for gaming. You would be better off going AM5 at this point. The 5900x is great for video production because of the multi core performance but that doesn't mean a lot for gaming.

If you want gaming and have to stick to AM4, consider the ryzen 5700x3d. I was surprised to see how close it was to the 5800x3d, for 50-80$ less. For 250$ it's hard to beat for the gaming performance it provides. It's only like 2-5fps less than the 5800x3d

Of course the 7800x3d is better but it's also like $100+

Not really, no one mentioned that the 5900x is a stronger cpu for workloads, and I still said go AM4 because the overall build would be cheaper now for a workload pc, rather than having to wait.

I said go AM5 if only gaming was the focus, and nothing about already having am4 hardware

You should read my comment earlier about the multi core work loads

If he lives by a Micro Center, 5800x3d is $269

Prices on these AM4 CPUs are getting interesting.

Will this go below $200 right before the next gen of AM5 are announced?

This is an older CPU and while there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, if you're building a machine from the ground up imo you're better off going socket AM5. That way, when your rig is a bit older you can (probably) find a nice final upgrade to eke out a bit more life - just like the chip in this thread can be a nice upgrade for existing AM4 users.

If you're going with a nice card like the 7900 XTX be sure to do some research and budget for a well-rated power supply (PSU) - don't skimp, and remember you can re-use it for your next build or upgrade.

Currently looking at the Cooler Master MWE Gold 850 V2 power supply.
