It would be nice if other sites price matched. I'm not willing to risk a fake from Amazon. Yes, I could always return the card, if it's fake, but I shouldn't have to go through the hassle.
Yes, sadly.

Great post! A lot of your experience tallies with mine. There used to be consumer protection agencies 20 years ago, but now the government can put people in charge that side with Big Tech. Samsung generally is considered one of the better companies in microSD cards and you agree with that, but if they surpress true problems and Amazon removes legit people's reviews that try to alert people to problem (as mis-information or dis-information) , it does get harder and harder to be an informed shopper.
To be clear, I wasn't trying to imply that Samsung was/is the only company to keep quiet on widespread issues. I believe most companies would act this way today.

Could these be a good alternative than backing up on a ssd portable drive?
Flash isn't necessarily the greatest backup media but it can be part of a good backup regime. There's a good chance data stored in flash will degrade faster than data stored on magnetic or optical media. As far as flash based media goes, SSDs likely use better quality flash than SD cards or USB flash drives. Brand also matters. In my opinion, an SD card isn't necessarily a bad backup option but it definitely should not be your only backup.

The nand in a good drive is probably higher grade than bottom barrel sd flash, that being said many ssds are known to bitrot when not connected to power for extended periods of time, you just have to distribute risk over many different media.

checkflash immediately began throwing errors.

Running h2testw now, we shall see.

*ok it passed, so perhaps check flash can't handle 512GB SD cards and is out of date, validrive/disk-filltest also passed.
