Of course I liked it better when it was on sale for $48

but this is the lowest price I've seen on it for a while... it got recommendations and good reviews from various websites back in it's time for being a reliable quality ssd (2.5 form factor) drive although there's been some controversy about the newer versions of it having problems with the firmware..
... on the other hand I've purchased (thinks) .. going off memory maybe two or three of the newer (firmware wise that is) that I've been using for several months now with no problems... I've purchased .. going off memory here I think maybe nine or ten of them of various sizes (from 250 GB to 1 TB, 1 TB more often than not ) and installed them in various desktop and laptops and have not had problems with any of them.

if that link doesn't work you can search on amazon by the model number, CT1000MX500SSD1
some reviews from way back when the drive was first introduced I believe

A mechanical drive is more reliable and cheaper.
1TB should be 40 at most.

I pulled the drive from my iMac which is no easy task (fortunately I hadn't replaced the tape yet and just had painter's tape holding it all together. Anyway, reinstalled on my other desktop and the computer didn't recognize it. Couldn't see it at all in Disk Management. Had a mix of not recognizing at all or just causing the computer to freeze up when I ran CrystalDiskInfo, Macrium, Acronis, etc. Crucial's own software couldn't see it.
Fortunately I was able to RMA it and get a replacement... time will tell if it performs any better. I had picked up a second one which hasn't failed yet but I haven't really done anything with it other than to check the firmware and physically install it... actually a bit paranoid to seal up the iMac and might just swap it out with a Samsung to be safe (and the recent problems with Samsung were the reason I went with Crucial in the first place... ::sigh:: ). Quality control has been crap since the pandemic, across the board.

Controller is SM2259AB
Flash is Micron 176L(B47R) TLC 2048Gb/CE 512Gb/die
(edit) I do think the cache was reduced from initial release though, you get more from Samsung for most equivalent models on that front.

dang, based on my own reading of customer reviews it seemed the crucial ssds fared worse inside imacs, but samsung prices are outrageous rn. im planning on doing a nvme & sata combo replacement for a 2019 model, but at these prices im tempted to leave the mechanical drive in it.
Happy with the new speed ,start up, downloading this and that.
Need this: "EYOOLD SATA to USB 3.0 Adapter Cable for 2.5 inch HDD/SSD, Hard Drive Adapter Converter Support UASP" to clone the hard drive your replacing to 'clone' over to this ssd card.
Very easy to do. Never did this kind of computer upgrade before.
It seems like Samsung or Crucial are the only players if you want SATA-SSD with TLC, 2+TB, cache, etc. The issue with Samsung was firmware and I believe it's been fixed but it might also be that they just haven't started failing yet (since the fix). Odds are that my other two MX500's will not fail, it's statistically unlikely based on reviews I've seen but there are some lemons out there for whatever reason.
You can still find some older models from other companies but usually 1TB or smaller; if I caught a good deal I'd probably do that instead. Crucial's RMA process was painless and I do think these drives will fail within a few months if they fail at all, and my only hesitation to use the MX500 is because it is an iMac and a pain to access so I might save these for my desktop or an external bay. If your HDD works, you could always keep that installed for backups and use an external for other stuff. I would definitely update to an NVME if you feel comfortable doing it; I've had no issue with that and it updated from 14.1 to 14.3 fine with that installed.

I did see that with Samsung NVME and the trim issues. I don't believe it applies to a SATA drive but I could be wrong as I haven't investigated. I have a WD NVME (SN810) for my Hackintosh boot drive.
