Amazon has listed several Paramount titles with 4K UHD/Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital presentations. They appear to be currently Walmart exclusives priced at $18.93, and also seem to be housed in DVD snap cases (as opposed to the typical Blu-Ray or 4K case). Amazon's release date is May 21.

The titles include:
The Untouchables [amazon.com]
Shutter Island [amazon.com]
John Carpenter's Escape From L.A. [amazon.com]
The Hunt for Red October [amazon.com]
Cloverfield [amazon.com]
Beverly Hills Cop [amazon.com]
Interstellar [amazon.com]

I actually found the Interstellar at Walmart recently and was super confused, but it did indeed come in a wonky DVD case and did have all four formats. I don't know why they're doing it like this, but it's a great deal.
Hate the packaging, love the price. Thanks!
Damn no VHS included, 5 copies would have been great.

Maybe it adds value to you, not debating that. But for most people, I think once they have a 4K BluRay setup, they aren't going to require a DVD or Standard BR. For your 'bedroom tv' use-case, wouldn't the digital code let you stream the 4k print, at a better bit rate and much better resolution anyway?

Don't get me wrong, I'd still prefer getting multiple formats in the box if paying the same price, but that won't be a deal breaker for me. I have the 4K + BR + Digital for Interstellar and yet for a moment I contemplated if I should buy this version - but I realized I would only add to landfill, waste my money on redundancy and end up with a little bit of regret if I make this purchase.
I genuinely hate "digital copies" and streaming. There is no ownership. It's a rental at best. Furthermore, I have no interest in having to be tethered to the internet at all times just to watch a movie. As far as I'm concerned, it's beyond ridiculous. Additionally, most supposed 4K digital streams look worse than standard 1080p Blu-rays -- oftentimes much, much worse... Most sound worse as well. This is all well-documented.

A "digital copy" isn't a substitute for an actual disc. It never will be. This is yet another reason why even the "lowly" DVD still has a place today, despite being a measly 480p and having compressed audio. At the end of the day, it has a major advantage -- you can take it and use it anywhere, no internet or memberships required, no screwing around with firmware updates, no battling HDCP issues, etcetera.

Again, DVD just works. Always. That's not something to scoff at. Clearly 4K Blu-ray or standard Blu-ray would be my preference, but DVD still has its uses and will likely remain the most reliable home video format ever created. So, again, I appreciate the studios who continue to bundle DVDs with BD releases.

I almost feel like this is a marketing tactic by Walmart, wherein they're trying to capture the attention of their lowest common denominator, the DVD buyer. I live in a rural area where the DVD bins are stocked and emptied more regularly than I would think that they would be.

Isn't everything a marketing tactic? That said, if this does bring more DVD-only people over to the Blu-ray and/or 4K market, that would be great. Wal-Mart needs to quit paring back their physical media selection. It seems like every week or two they've eliminated more and more. It's pathetic. You'd think they'd have the sense to seize the opportunity that Best Buy pulling out of physical media presents, and expand their physical media offerings to attract those customers, not continue to shrink their offerings. I badly miss the days when physical media was the only option, before all this "digital" and subscription streaming nonsense.

Always hated the non-standard and often DRM-riddled "digital copies" the studios want to give us. I've been building a media server for the last year, ripping optical (DVD/Blu-Ray/UHD Blu-Ray) to my HDD storage. If you have a UHD-compatible drive with the correct firmware installed, it's trivial to get a direct rip of the disk into digital format. I recently decided to stop collecting DVDs/regular Blu-Ray in favor of UHD Blu-Ray rips only now.

This is a great idea but yeah, they should have gone with blu-ray sized cases.

"Old movies," that were shot on film, are actually by far the best looking 4K releases, assuming they were scanned in 4K and mastered properly. By far...

Is the Case itself still the usual black plastic 4K UHD case?

Is there a reason why they're re-releasing these w/ different packaging? Is there anything different about the master or is it just new / worse packaging?
