I run mine in VA all the time, Uniden R series detectors have fantastic shielding so they are very difficult to be detected. As a resident, I wouldn't use it around town (personally don't speed really in town anyway) as it's a but riskier with getting caught, but I've driven past literally hundreds of Virginia State Police cars running radar and never had an issue.

Legal in 49 states. Just because you think something is illegal doesn't mean it is. The law is written in books not your mind.

The R4 and R8 both pair with Highway Radar which is great also great as a standalone app.

Love my R8.

Uniden R8 at $700. Slightly better front detection, far better rear detection and arrows to show the direction of the threat. For the price the R4 is pretty amazing though.
You can get a refurbished R8 with a two year warranty on eBay for around $550. That's what I paid for mine.

I'm talking about detection from RDD's (radar detector detectors), I don't bother physically hiding it, nobody is gonna see it anyways as it's mounted at the top of the windshield or on my visor.
I haven't been caught by RDD also the uniden units are pretty good about not leaking so they would have to be very close to catch it.

Yes, but in VA, they also can seize the radar detector if they find it in your car even if you're not using it. Sucks to get a ticket and have your item seized.
They seize it as evidence so technically you can get it back once you pay the ticket since paying the ticket is admittance of guilt. But either way it is still cheaper than the ticket, points and insurance premium increase.

Nope, I argue that the even bigger reason to have one is to map out all the automatic door openers in your neighborhood. It's a hobby but it's MY hobby. Besides, what's wrong with knowing where the speed traps are ? By slowing down the radar detector HELPED the ultimate goal of speed traps, to slow people down. Just wave at the po po when you drive past their speed trap. Win, win right ?
The GOAL of speed traps is revenue.

Not true. On occasions when I am not in a hurry and go speed limit, nearly every one else goes much faster than me. Ironically going speed limit when everyone else is going 10 mph over could be dangerous.
Not sure about other states but here in SE Michigan you'll look like you're standing still if you abide by the 70mph limit on the highways.

What's a "speed trap"? If you're going over the speed limit, you're at risk for getting a ticket anywhere...it's not a trap..

This better than my Valentine V1? haven't really kept up with detector tech.
This one is going to be easier to use and have some features a V1 doesn't, but a V1 has longer range detection. If this was a R7/8/9 I'd say the Uniden is better, but this is Uniden's budget model.

How does this compare to the alternatives? Appears to be good value for money but what would you buy if you wanted something a little nicer?
Go up a step and get a R7 or 8. I prefer Uniden over Escort or Valentine, but I had an Escort 360 Max something and it was pretty good too.

Speed traps are usually areas of short distance speed reduction zones that can catch you off guard. Usually the locals are well aware, but a detector can help you avoid being caught off guard.

We had one in a nearby town that was well known for giving tickets for 1 mph over the limit.

What the hell are you talking about ? I was replying to "as far as I know, only used to detect speed traps". (refering to radar detectors) So my reply is to point out they are also used to detect other radar emitters like automatic door openers. Your "The GOAL of speed traps is revenue" where does that fit into any of this ?
