Guaranteed to be more powerful than whatever Nintendo releases next year...
Yet Nintendo gets away with it and we (meaning me included) will still happily shill out the cash for it and the next mario, zelda etc. Switch sales is multiples of all other handhelds combines... makes no sense but that's how it is.

For those whose had both a SD and other handheld, how critical are the touchpads? I'm planning to just play controller friendly games and then dock for anything needing a KBM
They are not at all critical for your use case. Trust me, I had a SD, and now use an Ally.

Nintendo's been around a long time. They fill a niche market and don't see their consoles at a loss during initial release. Don't want their product, don't buy it. If it weren't for Nintendo gaming today might be a lot different. First they brought the gaming market back from the Abyss with the Famicon / NES and they served as a major motivating factor when they spurned Sony when they were looking to collaborate on the Super NES CD-ROM.
Sony was the one that screwed Nintendo first. They were trying to strong arm them into giving up all licensing fees. Also, you need to lighten up.

But why? Steam Deck and other handhelds can emulate the games day-and-date when they release with better performance. You can buy the physical releases if you really care about supporting them...

The Switch console itself is best for kids or casual gamers that just want their games plug-and-play. 3rd parties will always do what nintendon't.

Nintendo is so crushingly cruel to fan developed projects that I think it is perhaps unethical to give them money. Switch games emulate flawlessly on PC which makes the decision even easier.

I'm still mostly fine with my steam deck. A better screen and native windows does sound so nice tho

The touchpad and touch screen will work on RTS games but it's a pain in the butt to get it to work accurately. Because you will end up selecting a bunch of stuff you didn't intend to. Everything else works good because you can either remap the keys or just use the pre defined keyed.

What I needed is the steam deck's efficiency, with the screen and controllers of the Go, and the body color and touch response of the Ally...

I ended up just getting the chunky Go. Best Buy also has some great open box deals for it.
Playtron will be unifying the OS for the non-Steam handhelds. At least thats the goal.

I agree. Nintendo has the wrong approach to it. People don't really play emulation. They want the ability to, but I'm not sure if anyone actually plays it all the way through. It's a form of healthy advertisement. The "HD" and emulation tbh is rather lazy approach on their end on title creation. We know this because of the community of emulation that showed that HD isn't hard to do and doesn't require much work. Nintendo either had to take emulation down or forced to work a little harder. We know what they chose.

Nintendo IS the gaming industry, everybody else learns from the master Lol , Shoulder buttons, thumbsticks, rumble features, wavebird controllers, motion controllers, and hybrid consoles. This has gone on for ever. Haters gonna hate, the Big N gonna do big N-ovations lol

Yeah, but.... A Retroid Pocket 4 or Anbernic RG556 is half the price if you just want to play Fortnite and other Android games.

Recommend doing some research before anyone goes in on this. This is the NON "Extreme" version. It's basically a downgraded chipset from the Z1 Extreme which is usually $599 new or ~$500ish open box. The general consensus is that there is a measurable difference in performance and that the Z1 Extreme is very much worth the cost to upgrade. Steam Deck generally reviews out better than this non Extreme version with the OLED version out performing it and even the LCD version is on par. For some folks with specific use cases where you want a Windows handheld and aren't planning to play many AAA titles, this might work, but I think that use case is fairly narrow. Then again there's quite a few people who have purchased this and are more than happy and don't miss the extra performance. Just be aware of your use case is all I'm saying.

Also beware the SD card issue. If you are buying an Ally it's best to just assume the SD card reader is dead or will be dead at some point. It's safer to just put the money you'd spend on an SD Card toward an new larger internal SSD.
