I wanted to ask the experts if these Synology is needed for home backups of computers and devices? I have older laptops laying around that I would hook up an external storage to and use TrueNAS or Unraid (would have to figure that out) but any advantage to getting one of these? Synology or Qnap seems super expensive for my uses so just seeing thoughts here. thanks.

First off, anything is better than nothing. Even if is just your super-important files on to a USB stick or SD card. So, just like what you described is at another level over the USB stick, the NAS is at another level over your setup. It also costs more, so if that is an issue you go with what you got. Personally, I have mine setup to mirror for the redundancy. I have been screwed in the past with a single drive backup. That, along with being connected directly to the LAN, was what sold me on getting one. FYI, the cheaper you go in the model lineup, the slower it will transfer data. Not a real killer on a daily basis, but can take forever to migrate your data over to in during initial setup. I would stick with Synology, but you can read up on the differences in the brands.
