Was it an older model? I had the same issue until I upgraded to an HP version. No problems since.

I have the old 6.5 inch saw and thought it was terrible and underpowered (borderline dangerous). I bought a diablo blade for it (frequently on sale) and it really woke it up. It is still a low tier tool, but much, much more usable.
I have heard good things about the 7.5 inch brushless as another commenter said. It is only $100 vs $250 for a DeWalt. I may move up to that if I have another big project.

Don't give up on Ryobi because of this very old tool. They are the same manufacturer as Milwaukee, so they do know how to make good tools. You go to Ryobi because of the variety, but buy your main used tools from a higher tier company (DeWalt, Milwaukee, etc). I have DeWalt and Ryobi, the combo gives me everything I need, and flexibility on pricing.

With Ryobi I've learned over the years to throw away the bits, blades, consumables, etc that come with the tool. Put any decent not even high end blade on and they work so much better. I hear people complain often but still using the stock junk. Ryobi should just ship them without a blade. Or with a Milwaukee or Diablo. Even the Avanti or cheapo dewaults woke my skill saw up

I can cut through 2in lumber no problem with the 5in model. You need to change out that stock blade!
