I read that saw stopping technology made progress in congress. May see a lot more deals on saws before a new mandate goes live

I actually ordered this saw a week ago at this price. I currently have a R4511 Ridgid table saw with the granite top. Great saw, but I decided at this price point I would bite. I can probably sell that Ridgid saw for over $400, so that will help offset the cost even more. I already have several Shop Fox tools in my shop and have been pleased with them. Their customer support has always been helpful when I have had a question. If you plan to run this on 220v there is a circuit breaker that you have to upgrade as well as doing the rewire. When I contacted them about what parts were

"*This machine is prewired for 115V operation. 230V operation requires purchase and installation of conversion kit X1888224X."

The part number stated does not show up on their website that I could find. I contacted customer service and below is what I was told.

"We appreciate you contacting us regarding your question. You would need the PX1888224X Circuit Breaker 10A. We have provided a link to view/purchase the item."

Volvo famously gave away their patent for the 3 point seat belt. This is similar but I still think SawStop is hiding something because they hold TONS of patents and giving away one isn't going to be enough. SawStop doesn't have the best history regarding altruism.

Was very tempted to buy the laguna f2 for $1700. Should I get this instead and pocket a fiver?
I would get the shop fox. Grizzly customer support is generally pretty great and Laguna's is generally pretty poor. Grizzly also has parts for pretty much anything they have ever made. If, in ten years time, something needs to be replaced I would suspect Grizzly would be far more likely to have the part in stock. Just make sure you buy a good straight edge and check the table is flat when you receive it.

It looks like this is left-tilt, but I didn't see that called out anywhere. I'm old enough to remember when that was a new feature but I guess maybe it's standard nowadays?

Seems like a great price, may not offer a lot more raw HP than a contractor or bench saw, but the difference in stability and table size make this a worthwhile upgrade imo.

Yeah, bosch was very opposed to mandates that they made a superior tech and the angelic altruistic sawstop sued them.

And shortly after sold out to festool. What a morally superior company.
Yup, the SawStop inventor is a patent attorney

Bosch REAXXX was just as bad at cutting hot dogs as SawStop, and it doesn't destroy your blade

How can they "let" one. Arent patents time based? I have been waiting for them to expire so all saws start incorporating the safety technology.

Also reveals everyone but sawstop is opposed to mandating this tech. They'd rather 4000 fingers a year get chopped off. manufacturers declined to license the tech when offered by the inventor, so he started sawstop. F*** if I'm supporting any other manufacturer.

Sawstop tried to have their technology mandated so they were the monopoly seller of table saws. I'm all for safety but I don't intend to reward that behavior with my money.

100% this is rent seeking from TTS/Festool (neƩ Sawstop). In a wild twist Bosch did license the patent retroactively for the superior Reaxx system but presumably the terms were so punitive that it wasn't profitable or rational to keep on the market but was less than the alternative cost of further litigation.

What's really crazy is in moment of humility (and because they are not currently selling the Reaxx system) they admitted to flaws in the design because of false triggers from newer generation cellphones which were not a factor in 2016 (https://toolguyd.com/bosch-reaxx-...nt-buy-it/).

I expect any future YouTube demos featuring a hot dog sausage should be updated to include a hotdog sausage holding a smartphone on a cellular FaceTime call to present an accurate depiction of the technology.

Anyone with thoughts on this actual saw? Just getting in to woodworking and cabinet making. Currently using a jobsite table saw. Obviously this would be an upgrade but wondering if it's necessary at this juncture?
Even my $600 Delta T2 contractor saw (I think it's $700 now) was a big upgrade from a jobsite saw. This looks like a good deal unless you're saving up for a Sawstop or something top of the line.

2HP at 115V is 24A not 16A. Some funny numbers here.

2HP is 1492 watts. 16A @ 115v is good for 1840. It's definitely believable to me.

Don't have access behind the pay wall on the article but did see reporting during the CPSC hearings. Of course saw stop who effectively has a monopoly on patents necessary to implement the technology would want to mandate it. They'd effectively have a dominant position in the market by either have the only saw in town that complies or collect licensing fees from all other manufacturers.

Saw stop is great technology, I wish I could afford it. Saw Stop is not some altruistic company, they enforce their patents, they kept their competing technology off the market made by Bosch. Also, while not revealed I'm imagining the licensing fee for use of their patents must be pretty onerous that no other maker of saws would want to pay and have a competing product in a very high end segment of the market.

I hope as these patents expire we see that technology be made available on more affordable saws. I'm not a fan of the government mandating it, especially when it picks a winner in an industry at the expense of others. If the government is going to mandate this it needs to come with some guarantees from Saw Stop to offer a reasonable licensing fee for their technology.

This is essentially the pre inflation price. IE 2019. Probably won't be able to get a better NEW saw at this price.

I own the Grizzly-branded equivalent of this saw. Overall I think they are ok, and definitely an upgrade from jobsite by virtue of their cast iron surface, belt-driven motor, and weight.
All that said - if I were buying today - I'd get a Harvey. In terms of build quality and price it seems hard to beat. Yes, they cost more, but they are a very good value. I own their C14 bandsaw, it's a high quality machine for a very good price. Harvey has 'sales' virtually daily.

I use a 120v sawstop as a hobbyist woodworker and it's never given me issue. I use a thin kerf blade and rarely have an issue. If I do, I bring the blade up, or make multiple passes.

I still think this is a good deal on a new saw for 90% of people.

short answer: if you need a better table saw at the moment, then this would be a huge improvement
long answer is no one can really answer this for you. We don't know what your needs are, maybe the jobsite saw fills those needs completely. I just do random woodworking projects, so I started off with a dewalt jobsite saw that was great for what I needed at the time, but as my skill progressed, I demanded more from my tools and that saw took too much effort to get the results I was looking for. I ended up upgrading to a 20 year old delta unisaw that I got off craigslist for $500 (a steal) and the difference between the two was astronomical. It's a 3hp saw, but I don't imagine a 2hp will be as underpowered as everyone is making it out to be. Also, it's not like you can't work around it.
