Cam Plus Lite is free and allows you to have motion detection with 12 second videos. The only catch is you have to wait 5 minutes for another 12 second motion detected video. However, with playback (via the SD) this isn't a major inconvenience as you can simply watch that 'missed' 5 minutes if you believe something occurred during that time. I actually don't mind the 5 minute intervals as it removes a lot of redundant motion detections. I only turn on motion detection at night, so 'traffic' (cars, people, animals, etc.) is far less than during the day, so the 5 minute intervals matter even less.

If you don't want to pay for a subscription, then a Wyze cam with Cam Plus Lite (at $0) and an SD (with continuous recording) is the way to go for sure.

While the image quality and night vision are great on these, their failure rate is terrible. I had 3 croak, including 2 sent as replacements that came out of the box dead. They have serious issues with light/shadow causing false motion detections, and a lot of people (myself included) are experiencing strange audio issue (static-like, but weird). I can't recommend them, if you need reliability.

Since the quality control seems to be lacking badly on new gear, maybe you're actually better off with a refurb!

I recently discovered the TP-Link Tapo cameras. They have similar prices to these in amazon right now. Great integration with home assistant and can work local only if you need. Look into them if the wyze ones are not completely to your liking.

I have these cameras and I'm switching to something else when my camplus expires. Way too many security breaches recently where people's camera feeds were seen by other people. Google it.

Hmm weird. I've had those things happen with the v1s and v2s but my V3s I've since replaced all of them with have been flawless. The audio has always been a bit shit on all these tiny cameras imho but still better than the previous versions.

Agree, I've had a Eufy fail but no Wyze yet. OTOH, I don't think size (if you want to call them tiny) is an excuse for the poor audio quality up to now - I specifically switched to Eufy in a use case as their audio has been significantly better.
